Transmission fluid leak PG
Transmission fluid leak PG
Took my ‘64 vert with 110/PG on a 3 hr round trip this weekend. Ran fantastic on back roads. Had about a 30 minute ride on the interstate both ways. About half way thru both trips on interstate, I started to blow out transmission fluid for a short period. It was probably the first real distance on her in 35 years! The fluid looks like it’s coming from rear drivers side. I’m wondering if anyone has had this happen, or know what the likely culprit is. Thanks, Mark.
Re: Transmission fluid leak PG
Check the PG cable itself to see if the sheath has cracked. Usually right where it goes into tranny...

Re: Transmission fluid leak PG
Fluid coming out the dip stick tube in back of the right carb is a clogged vent. I had a local trans shop check mine out because of that problem & they unclogged the vent, no more fluid coming out. I don't know what they did to unclog it though. The vent is on the top of the back plate on the back of the trans.

1965 monsa powerglide transmission fluid leaking from dip stick when driven. Rubber grommet in top of stick there but dried out. Is this normal for tranny to pump fluid up the dip stick tube?

Your tranny vent is plugged, I had that happen with my 64 & had the engine out so I took the tranny to a local shop go over it & they found the vent plugged. Car had sat for 22 years & all it needed was to be unplugged. Have not had a leak since. The shop I went was owned by a guy who has been doing Corvairs since the early 60's...
...I don't have a photo of it but the vent is on the back plate of the trans close to the top. Looks like a little button, mine was stuck solid. After the guy cleaned it it would wiggle and I don't know how he cleaned it. You should be able to see & get to it alright, if you can get your hand on it see if it feels solid. Maybe he used pliers or tapped it lightly to break it loose???????????

There are other possibilities, according to the troubleshooting chart on page 45 of 46 in the attached Corvair Powerglide Automatic Transmission Service Guide (broken into 5 parts to permit uploading to the Corvair Forum).
OIL FORCED OUT OF FILLER TUBE...
- Oil level too high causing planet carrier to run in oil and cause foam.
- Oil pickup pipe split or not sealed causing air entrainment.
As shown in the illustrations below, there is an O-ring seal [42] in the valve body that provides a seal for the oil pickup [43]. A screw [47] is used to secure the oil pickup. If the oil pickup is loose, or if the O-ring seal has deteriorated, or if the oil pickup has split, it may be that air is being introduced into the oil flow as the oil is drawn into the system by the pump. This could be a possible cause of foaming in the oil.

Re: Transmission fluid leak PG
Great info. Just yesterday I was wondering how to know if those zig zag bends in the stick were bent. Thanks!
