1965 Monza Question

I am looking at a 65 Monza convert. It has a 140 hp w/4-sp. vin# shows it is a Monza, however, it has the full instrumentation dash. I thought that this dash was only available on the Corsa and I can’t find where the dash was an option on the Monza.......was it?

Probably aftermarket install. I just asked this morning about a Monza for sale in Los Angeles with an obviously Corsa instrument cluster. The guy said it was from a wrecked Corsa.

There is not a great deal of difference between a Corvair Corsa and the Corvair Monza. The body weight, suspension and brake configuration and powertrain (four-speed transmission and 140 hp engine) is really identical when comparing the two model options. As you pointed out, the Corsa instrument panel and interior/body trim are the only differences. The original Corsa would not be found with a 110 hp engine or a Powerglide automatic transmission. The 140 hp engine was standard on the Corsa but optional on the Corvair Monza or 500. The automatic transmission option was only available on the Monza and 500. The overall body style, handling characteristics, and braking characteristics were identical on all three versions of the late-model Corvair. It is not unusual to find a Corsa clone where the instrument panel and trim had been swapped from a donor vehicle. The body tag and VIN number reveals the true origin of the vehicle, but the owner/buyer will have to decide if the true vehicle heritage is really that important. A late-model Corvair convertible is a configuration that is very susceptible to the ravages of time, rust, and body rot. So those considerations should be a top priority for the buyer. If you can find a clean, relatively rust-free convertible that has spent most of its life in a climate that does not use road salt to keep the streets clear, the aging vehicle may be a good candidate for ownership and restoration.

When considering a specific car for purchase, and inexperienced Corvair buyer can benefit by inquiring on a website like the Corvair Forum for recommendations and advice. Posting detailed photographs of the vehicle and its VIN tag and body tag (both in the engine compartment) can provide you with useful recommendations from experienced Corvair owners. There are also CORSA (Corvair Society of America) club chapters scattered throughout the United States and Canada. Depending on your geographic location, you may find that a CORSA club chapter is not far from your location.

Thank you. One of the tags (don’t know which one) is mounted in the engine bay left side rail by the battery. Where is the other mounted?

The VIN is the chrome tag by the battery. All production data options etc. are on the data plate which is normally located on top of the rear cross member aft of the coil and distributor area.
Corvair guy since 1982. I have personally restored at least 20 Vairs, many of them restored ground up.
Currently working full time repairing Corvairs and restoring old cars.

Vin and body tag reveal the information. On my Corsa, which is almost ready to go, the body tag is on the driver's side engine mount plate. Image

The id / serial number is on the driver's door.
