I have that catalog also,the HP increase Claims are very Hopefull at the very most! maybe real life 1/4 of their specs.

Yes, I've got that catalog also. It came with a corvair project car that had been sitting since the 80's. When I saw 30% increase with that exhaust, I thought that was a bit optimistic too. Super neat stuff though!! I want to get some quick ratio steering arms.

Former IECO president Raoul Balcaen, III

Out of curiosity I did a little searching for IECO president Raoul F. Balcaen III this evening. His current address and phone number is listed on the Internet. He is still living in the Los Angeles area and is 77 years old. He lives near the Bel-Air Country Club, only 6.2 miles from the site of the old IECO store. The IECO catalog brings back memories. When I was a teen and living in Thousand Oaks, California (1971) I actually visited the IECO Santa Monica store, where I purchased their center carb manifold and tubular headers and exhaust system to install in my Corsa. The headers did not seal very well against the exhaust tube seals on the 140 hp heads. The Holley carburetor I was using was running rich, and the poor exhaust manifold seal permitted air to be drawn into the headers, which would sometimes ignite the fuel in the exhaust and would cause flames to shoot out of the tailpipes. I think I nicknamed them "jet-fire fuel ignitors" (after some J.C. Whitney catalog spark plugs that were on the market back then), and managed to get pulled over and receive a few threats from the police in Thousand Oaks, making the Thousand Oaks police angry about my loud, "flame thrower" Corvair exhaust!

IECO's former location at 1431 Broadway, Santa Monica is now an empty parking lot (behind the blue VW), next to a medical building.

Brings back memories for me too.

I had the IECO 2-bbl for my 110HP '65 Monza coupe in the Bay Area back in '75 to '77.

(anybody remember a Panther Pink coupe with Camaro rear lights? yeah, that was me..

I used a Rochester 2BBL off a small GM V-8 as the carb, tended to run pretty rich around town, despite rejetting. However with a light throttle foot on the open road, I did turn a respectable 28MPG on trips, as well as a documented 32 on the economy run at the 1975 Seattle convention.


This was with no preheat to the carb mount, strictly running ambient air.

I was running without an air cleaner one morning on the way to West Valley College when it gave a cough, and backfired causing a car fire that took 7 of the local fire department's BIG extinguishers to put it out.
I was able to rebuild the car, eventually the smell went away.

Part of the fun of being a long-time Corvair owner is the past memories that just driving a Corvair causes to resurface!
