Re: VDO cylinder head temp gauge
I installed my VD O thermocouple at the threaded hole on the left head where the thermister goes on a 140 or turbo. I believe I used a short 3/8-18 bolt (might be a different size) and two washers. Drilled a hole in the rear shroud and used a grommet under the oil cooler just like the 140 & turb...

Re: Carburetors for a 63 turbo
I had the same problem with my 63 turbo. I got Bob Helt's book on the YH and was able to figure out the gremlins and got it to run great. I highly recommend the book. It's available at most Corvair vendors.

Re: Carburetor color
I have used the eastwood "gold" paint on my carbs. They don't look too bad. I like it. It does not look anodized but I think they look better than raw aluminum. Make sure you prep them properly.

Re: Electrical Gremlins
Make sure the knob is not sticking. Loosten the set screw and remove the knob. Test again carefully with a pair of pliers. If not that, I will betcha it is the switch if the wiring checks out.

Re: Starting a engine that has sat for a long time
You can get gear oil in a tall bottle. They make a hand pump that replaces the bottle cap. Fill the trans at the side level check bolt in the trans. Fill until the oil overflows from the hole. The trans and diff share oil but it does not always flow from the trans to diff quickly. If the trans was e...

To test the pump, Take the pump in your hand and seal the in and out ports with your fingers. Push the lower pin of the pump against the work bench quickly. You should feel pressure and suction on the ports with your fingers. I like to use E85 compatible fuel hose between the tank and body line, bod...

Re: Checking wiring ignition to starter/battery/coil
Ignore the yellow wire for now. The purple wire on the starter is the start wire from the keyswitch. Put the negative probe from the volt meter on a good ground under the car. The positive wire goes on the purple wire on the starter. Have someone turn the key to start. You should get 12v. If not. Ch...

I had the same problem on my van. Most of the time when starting off from a dead stop the clutch chattered. I found that the input shaft seal had blown and I had gear oil all over the clutch. I installed 2 seals, cleaned the flywheel & pressure plate and installed a new clutch disc. While I was ...
