Re: Lowering the Vair

How many of you older guys remember spring clamps that we used in the early 60's? You could squeeze down as many coils you wanted for the height you wanted. They were just long bolts with a steel blocks with a U cut in them & you tightened the nut down with another nut to lock it. I had my 60 C...

Lowering the Vair

I am still working with my front chassis on my 1963. Still have to do all new bushings...etc. However, I would like to lower it a little if possible. I know a lot of you have cut the coils, like 1 1/2 or something. I can't remember now. I was playing on google, and saw this on the jalopy journal. Is...

Re: Wheel Cylinder Questions

Thanks everyone. So it appears that I have two left front whel cylinders. Ugh I will see if it matches my left front. I have my upper and lower control arms off ready to send in for cores. When ordering my nice new shiney ones from clarks, well bead blasted and painted with new bushings and A arm sh...

Wheel Cylinder Questions

Two part question...... I was looking on rock auto for wheel cylinders for my 63. They show on there metallic, or non metallic? I don't get it! How did I know what I have, metallic or non? Their are different sizes too for cylinders? When I got the car off the guy, he gave me two wheel cylinders, &q...

Re: Control Arm bushings...etc.

You are correct there is no difference between the left and right Lower arm. A broken bolt is not the end of the world, an easy out will take care of that. I had a broken bolt in mine also, it is still good and ready for install. Once undertaken you find just how much work it is, but if you have th...

Re: Control Arm bushings...etc.

Okay, I was working on my 63 Corvair today. And I broke one of the bolts off the shock mount going in the lower control arm. I have a spare set up laying here. But the good control arm is in the opposite side. Are both lower control arms the same? I was looking at them and I can't see a difference b...

Re: Control Arm bushings...etc.

Yes, I may spend the extra on this part of the vehicle, and get them done, or buy them assembled. Heck, I didn't even get to the rear suspension yet. I don't even know whats involved in that, being I am new to Vairs?? Is it as bad as the front? Another big question!! I have the chassis on the ground...

Re: Control Arm bushings...etc.

It's almost sound easier to buy the control arms from Clarks assembled. :sad5: I kind of thought the A arm shafts looked like they had to be installed while pressing the bushings in at the same time. I didn't think to ask if the upper A arms assembled by them came with new A arm shafts when I was on...

Control Arm bushings...etc.

I have to do my Control arm bushings, and A arm shafts on my 1963 suspension. Actually, pretty much all new suspension front and rear. Clarks seems a bit high, but I dunno, I will figure out who has the best bang for my buck. I don't know of many places yet, since I am still new to Vairs. I called C...

Re: fan belt

This is an older post and we haven't heard from UlrtaVanMan, the original poster. The fan information is correct. However All year Corvairs with Powerglide transmissions , did not have the same issue with steel fan-flywheeling due to the fan weight. This was the main issue with the heavy fans. With...

Re: Where to buy rims?

Is 3 1/2 backspacing okay? According to the one link someone posted above for early models, It said stock for early models is 4 1/4. Would this 3 1/2 work okay? I'm not an Early guy but I think you would be fine . My late model has 15x6 front wheels with 3 3/8 BS and 205/50 tires and even spacers b...

Re: Where to buy rims?

Interchange Information. Since many folks want to know what to shop for online, at swap meets, junk yards, etc., here is some info which might be helpful. Earlies have 4 lugs on a 4 1/2" (114.3mm) bolt circle. Other cars with that 4 on 4 1/2 pattern are: Acura Legend '86 to '90 Chevy Nova, Che...
