The brake line will rust not only from the outside, but from the inside as well; so it's not always visible.

Re: 65 monza fuel tank install
Did you closely inspect the Brake Lines while your Gas Tank was out? Replacing them when the tank is out, especially if they are original to the vehicle would not be a bad idea. Then again....it is easy to get into the "While I am at it" syndrome where a simple project becomes much more. Changing ...

Re: 65 monza fuel tank install
The first time I installed a Corviar gas tank, I found that the new J-bolts were about 1" too long. I ended up using 3/8"-drive sockets as spacers. As for the filler tubes, I have had the best luck installing the tank first and then connecting the filler tubes. I put the hose couplers on the tank ...

Front Hubs Filled with Grease
I run into this occasionally and it always makes me scratch my head. Yesterday, when I removed the front wheel hubs to service the bearings, I observed that the previous owner had packed the middle of the hub with grease. This doesn't seem correct to me, since that part of the hub doesn't make ...

Re: Torque converter disconnect from engine
Corvden, I've this situation a few times where the bolt is only part way out. I was able to get a small "crow foot" pry bar ( or maybe make a tool to work) under the head of the bolt to pry up on it, which will hopefully keep the nut in its square hole as you slowly turn the bolt by hand. That was ...

Re: Rampside Shudders While Stopped in Gear
It needs to be determined if it is the engine or trans. Since you have points I would with the trans in gear and the shutting occurring, pull 1 spark plug wire at a time to see if they are all participating. You could have a engine miss fire causing the problem. I would remove them at the cap and ...

Re: Rampside Shudders While Stopped in Gear
How about if the shutter revolves around the low band being re-applied when coming to a stop? It would feel like a lockup converter not unlocking when coming to a stop, in a modern car. I plead ignorance when it comes to the inner-workings of an automatic transmission. Is this low-band issue you ...

Re: Rampside Shudders While Stopped in Gear
Dennis, the rubber on the old mounts was hard but not disintegrating. The new mounts from Clarks appear to be of high quality. There is nothing visibly wrong with them.

Re: Rampside Shudders While Stopped in Gear
Can you more clearly describe “shudder”? Is this like a rough idle? Is it jerky when moving? The fact that it goes away with a restart and returns after acceleration and idling makes me think it’s not mechanical like something out of balance. I agree on checking the distributor. Probably should chec ...

Re: Rampside Shudders While Stopped in Gear
Thank you, Brad for a wealth of information. For clarification, the picture of the 1961 engine with the early fan is from my Lakewood. My '62 Rampside has a '63 engine with breaker points and a magnesium fan. The points and condenser are due to be changed out, so I will do that first thing and keep ...

Rampside Shudders While Stopped in Gear
My Rampside (Powerglide) has developed a shudder when stopped or moving very slowly in gear. In neutral, the engine starts instantly and idles very smooth. Once I accelerate, the shudder disappears and the truck runs normally. I was convinced that problem was a failing torque converter. But the ...

Re: Best EM yoke puller
If you have an extra yoke in your junk box, you can bolt it to the yoke you wish to remove and then use a gear puller to extract the yoke from the axle.

I see what you mean. Thanks!

Re: Putting an AGM battery in a Group 53 Case
Hmm, that's a good point. Have you added acid and charged the dry charged battery? it might work for years. There are a couple of reasons I need to convert the battery to AGM. First, I have heard from two reliable sources that NOS batteries of that vintage don't work very well. Second, I need to ...

Re: Putting an AGM battery in a Group 53 Case
There are a ton of amazing batteries out there in a small case these days. just search High output car stereo battery and you will see some very good ones. here is a link to one I like (but I have not put one in a Corvair), you can look at the dimensions and see if it works for you https://www ...

Putting an AGM battery in a Group 53 Case
Finally, I scored a NOS Delco Group 53 battery, which I plan to gut and install an AGM inside. I know this has been done numerous times, but I don't know which AGM battery will fit in the case and provide sufficient cold cranking amps to start a Corvair. I's appreciate any information regarding the ...
