1965 Corsa Exterior Paint
1965 Corsa Exterior Paint
My Corsa was repainted an ugly gold and I would like to bring it back close to original which was blue. The ID paint code is D-D and I was wondering if there is a paint I could ask for to get somewhat close.
Thank you
Jeff

Re: 1965 Corsa Exterior Paint
Keep in mind some counties, especially in Calif. do not allow solvent base coats. They can only ship water based base coat colors to certain addresses.
Nothing against water based paints (they do work now), but the old metallic colors just don't render well. Same issue with the old enamel paints - too thick a medium and the metallic particles "sink" and you get a darker color. So it you want a brighter metallic keep that in mind.
You can still get the old colors done in solvent base coats (apply thinly for even metallic and it dries to a matte finish) and you can apply the 2K clear coat and must be within 8 hours or it will peel later. BTW - Spray cans are EXEMPT (so far) in most areas. I've had stuff mixed by code from a couple places and the computerized paint mixers are amazingly accurate. Can't see the difference. If you haven't checked paint prices you'd better sit down first.
BTW - for little jobs you can buy 2K catalyst clear coat in double barrier cans (you puncture and mix and have about a day to use it up). The spray can clear coat dries FAST, but needs a few weeks to cure hard before you buff it out.

The blue is super nice. Yes I have seen paint prices and they are crazy.

Re: 1965 Corsa Exterior Paint
You can thank your paint prices on EPA and California. Red is expensive, I just couldn't spend $1100 for a gallon of it, took one step down and price dropped to just less than $600. Plus Clear Coat, Expoxy Primer, Sanding Primer, Sealer.....I think it was about what I spent on my engine parts in the end.

Re: 1965 Corsa Exterior Paint
I just recently painted a 62 700 wagon inside and out. red color, and sealer, basecoat, and clearcoat only materials cost was just under 3k. The good PPG primer I like is now around $550 for 6 quarts sprayable:(
