Dallas TX 66 MONZA newbie here!

Post by chemik »

Hello,
just picked up a 66 Corvair Monza. 85k
Got a sweet deal since it has a knock in the motor. Will probably drop the motor and rebuild it. Ordered the Corvair manual on CD so I hope it explains it all. If not im off to find someone in the Dallas area that will do this rebuild for me :)

Not bad. Interesting wheels.

Carefull who you use to rebuild if you farm it out. aircooled engines have much closer tolerances than water cooled and some eng rebuilders don't know it and ruin stuff. Also the head gasket area surfacing in the heads is particularly difficult without just the right machining setup (cockeyed heads with leaky head gaskets suck).
Corvair guy since 1982. I have personally restored at least 20 Vairs, many of them restored ground up.
Currently working full time repairing Corvairs and restoring old cars.

thanks guys, I need to find a good builder then . I also need to fix the linkage on it. I pushed the gas pedal to the floor the other day to start it and i heard a click, now the pedal is on the floor and it barely starts up and idles, Im sure something came loose but I have no idea. New to this. haha

got it fixed. the part that attaches to the body where the accelerator linkage begins broke off from the body due to a rusty spot. Got it welded up now. Also checked my oil filter and found no shavings in it. Maybe the knocking im hearing is a valve.

Welcome.

I learned through mine knocking, that it will just decide to do it for no apparent reason. Take it for a spin and get the oil pressure up some, it should go away if its a lifter. :fingerscrossed:

Hey chemik, I thought you had come to one of our Club meetings last month. There was a new guy that had a car the same color as yours and almost identical wire wheels.
