Hey Guys,
Stupid question, Can I install a Turbo onto my 63 corvair 500?
I'm guessing it's probably yes but i'm just asking.
Thanks

You can install virtually any Vair engine in any Vair. You can also readily install a Vair turbo setup on any Vair engine. There are , however a lot of differences in the engines (turbo vs non turbo) as well as significant differences in shrouding, throttle and fuel systems. Some combinations of parts will work poorly, some ok, some might self destruct.

You also have to state whether you want a stock turbo set up such as a 150 or a 180 or a custom set up. Stock would probably be more affordable and easier. If you do not have experience with turbos you probably would be best served buying a complete stock turbo engine. Piecing them together can get very expensive quickly as there are many parts. Since they were produced in limited quantities parts can be harder to find and a little more expensive.

I was asking about stock turbo didn't know that they make custom turbo kits. Have found them yet.

No, a custom turbo set up would be something fabricated meaning you would source all of the parts and make/modify existing parts as needed to make it operational.
Buying a complete set up would be more sensible, but you also have to take into consideration that original parts are 50 years old now.
Here is an example. You buy something like this
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1964-CHEVY-CORV ... 7675.l2557" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Then overhaul engine, turbo, etc.
Also, GM didnt just bolt a turbo onto a Corvair engine. The engine itself had the following upgrades for durability. These are just some of the items:
heavy duty connecting rods (62-63 engines)
upgraded top piston ring
upgraded alloy exhaust valves
bronze exhaust valve guides
Nitrided crankshaft
specially curved distributor with boost retard in place of vacuum advance
right side head with provision for turbo drain.
large oil cooler
Also, turbo engines were manual transmission only.
then there are the unique turbo specific engine tins such as fan shroud, right side heater box and outlet

So is it possible to put a 180 HP turbo engine in a 63 Rampside with minimal mods? I got offered one at a very affordable price.

You either have to raise the lid to clear the turbo and cross over
OR
you have to modify or make a new intake crossover, shorten the turbo inlet pipe and outlet pipes.
