It's official. I'm an idiot.

Post by Nickshu »

Replaced my fuel tank, all rubber lines and fuel filter. Spent a lot of time prepping and applying Por15 to the outside of the new tank.

Reinstalled the tank. Put in 5 gal of fuel. Car won't idle and is spewing brown smoke out the tailpipe.

Eek.... I didn't clean the greasy anti rust storage sealer from inside the tank. Apparently that was a required step. :dontknow:

So I filled it with another 5 gallons. Bounced the bumper a bunch to slosh it around. Going to drain it, blow out the lines and refill with fresh gas. Rebuilding my carb now but was planning to do that anyhow.

Should I replace my fuel filter? Not much of it flowed thru. Aah the fun of owning a 50 year old car.

Well, one comment. Without knowing what is in the "greasy anti rust storage sealer", the chemical contamination is only one concern. The size and volume of undissolved rust particles and other suspended contaminants that might have lodged in the filtration material and partially clogged the filter may have reduced its usefulness. Because of that I would recommend replacing the fuel filter, flushing the fuel lines and pump, and rebuilding the carburetor, as planned.

Should not be any rust particles as it is a brand new tank. Came with the "grease coating" on the inside, I can assume to prevent surface rust between the time of manufacturing and sale/install.

Regardless I will replace the fuel filter to be on the safe side. Will blow out all the other lines less the fuel pump itself, the small amt in there *should* not be a big issue.

Ugh. :banghead:

Another dumb move I made....put the gas filler gasket/seal on before installing the tank, then spent an hour trying to tease it into position at thru the filler door from the bottom. Popped it all the way thru *cursing* then found that you can very easily put it in place from the outside going in. Slid into place in about 15 seconds. Again: :banghead:
