Finnish 1960 Corvair 700

Post by Frankken »

Hi everybody.

It's been a while since I last have been checking this site. I've been busy with studies and stuff.
I thought I would make an update and post some pictures of my old Corvair.

Last summer I managed to get the car registered and drove it for a whole week (!) before it broke..
I was kinda fed up at that time and school started again so I didn't do much to it during the fall.
During the winter we (me and my dad) removed the engine and started to look into the problems.
After many issues with the starter and a change of the flywheel the engine worked. :tu:

I had been driving for a few weeks before the starter finally gave up. The aluminium nose was completely shattered.
Now we're waiting for a new starter. Anyone has any experience with the COMPETITION STARTER (150)U-5718 on Corvair Underground?

Here are some pictures:

However, according to the Clark's Corvair Parts catalog, the heavy duty starter shown at the bottom of the page fits all Corvair model years, 1960-1969, so it should fit your 1960 "Caveman" Corvair. You might want to confirm this with a message to Clark's Corvair Parts.

Johan,
That's a nice looking '60. I have not used the starters from Corvair Underground yet, someone here probably has experience with them. I'm sure they are good.

Do you have the only Corvair in Finland? This is the first I have heard of one in your country. :tu:

1960 CORVAIR STARTER.jpg
BECAUSE THER STORAGE AREA BEHIND THE REAR SEAT IS LOWER THE STARTER SOLENOID HAS TO BE HANGING DOWN. THIS IS DIFFERENT THEN ALL THE OTHER CORVAIRS.

Hi everybody and thanks for your replies!

We have already checked it up and the Heavy duty starter fits. The old starter we used was rebuilt from two different starters, the original 60-version and a newer one. The aluminium housing was also welded. I think that explains mostly why it broke.

In Finland a Corvair is truly a rare sight. I haven't seen one other than my own yet but I've heard that there are about 10-20 still rolling in this country.
Just gotta keep working on it! :tu:

Hey Frankken, my son was in Finland all last year. He was in Laihia. He spent a lot of time in Vasa but never mentioned seeing a Corvair. That's cool.
