Alternative Methods To Mount Door Panels?

Curious as to what others here may have used. The original method of the nails just seems crazy to me. Even before the 60's other companies used door pins...the ones Chevy used in later years that simply fit over the edge of the underlying cardboard panel and snap into the holes. Are these usable on our cars? Has anybody here tried? I want to make some custom panels and would like to go this way. If not, probably just drill through the panels after they are covered and use screws with finish washers.
