What other cool cars/bikes do you have/have you had?

Post by Vanman »

Besides my Corvan I also have a '63 custom bug project. I used to be into mini trucks. Had a red '88 S10 short bed dropped 4"/6" it rode and handled like a gokart. A little later I had a '89 long bed S10 with a mildly built 355, 9.5 to w comp, Edlbrock carb and intake, 3.42 rear and posie, 350 trans with a shift kit later put a 700r4 for highway cruising. I miss that truck. Built a '26 Hupmobile rat rod up to a roller, built my own frame and all, stalled on it with no cash and no way to get my paralyzed dad in it when it was done so I traded it for my Corvan.

That's my story in short. So let's here yours.

Besides my 66 corsa turbo conv. 65 corsa 140 conv. 05 Dodge quadcab. My favorite of all of them including the corvairs is my 88 Jeep Grandwagoneer.. I bought it 2nd hand in 1992. It has been a very good used purchase.. Biggest expense has been the transmission rebuild. If I had it to do over again, I'd bought 2 of them back in 92. They were fairly inexpensive back then and most had low miles.

My first car was a 56 Ford Vicky with a T-bird V8 and a 2 speed automatic. It was pink and white but I thought it was cool. It broke down the first day I had it and the rest is history. I ended up blowing up the motor and my it was my first motor swap when I dropped in a big 332.

Then I got a 62 Belair Bubbletop. It had a 396 4 speed in it when I got it but no seats. For the first week or so I sat on Mom's footstool to drive it. Not safe at all !!!!! I blew up the motor.
62belair2.jpg
Then my Jr year in HS I got a 68 GTO Vert. It was the very common Pontiac olive green with black top and interior. It had a 3 speed stick with 3.90 gears. Hide-a-way headlights , hood tach , tilt wheel and a radio. I blew up the motor.
u1430.jpg
Then the gas crisis of the early 70s and I bought my first ever brand new car. It was a 73 Opel Manta Rallye. Orange with black hood and stripes. It was a great little car. I read about some performance mods in Hot Rod magazine and next thing I knew I took off for California (from Missouri) to get the stuff and get it dyno tuned at Ak Miller's. Added Konis and some beefy BR-60-13s and now I was hooked on handling instead of brute power.

Then came a 71 Datsun 240Z. It was a major step up from the Opel with it's IRS and powerful 6.
I wrecked it a couple of times but never could hurt the motor. Even drove it clear from Mo to Ak and back when I was 19 .

Then I wanted a Pontiac Can Am but ended up with a 73 Grand Prix with a 455. I put in a big cam and gto heads and it was pretty strong for such a big car.

About this time is when I got my 68 Corv-8.

Working in the automotive trade I bought and sold or had use of several cars including Jags , a Lotus Europa, Jensen Intercepter, a few Vettes etc etc.

Then another 240Z - yeah , the one I almost died in.
zczr1.jpg
A few years went by with nothing cool and I moved back to alaska where I bought a 67 Monza 140 that I pretty much totally restorized and drove every day for almost ten years. During this time I got the 68 Sprint that I totally restored.

Mostly 4X4 Toyotas since then including my present 2007 Tundra 5.7. It flies !

I briefly had a Miata ( "me oughta" get something more practical) ::-): . It was an early one with a little motor and a silly automatic. Bright red with fancy wheel and a removeable hardtop.

I bought a 69 350/350 Vette about 8 years ago but didn't keep it long.

Now along with my "UNSAFE" corvair I have a 78 corvette with a 383 .

I likely left out dozens of others.

Thanks! I love the Jeep. Learned to drive in it and took my drivers test in it. :) It has a TBI 350, sm465 trans (granny low). The wheels on it now are my winter tires, old tube type bias tires. Gotta love em! lol

The 50 Chevy... She rarely drives it. LOL It's a 3 on the tree and she doesn't like to drive a standard, let alone on the column.... Our plan for it was to sort of do a resto mod. Keep the exterior original, down to the wheels and baby moons. Stock interior. Late model FI v-8 and auto tranny. $$ has put it on a hold for a while, it serves as a good back up car for local driving. I had it out the other day, still fun to drive.

Kevin, the pic of the 240 amazes me... I can't believe you are still here after that....

Just stumbled on this post... thought I'd add my two cents.

Like a lot of others I could make a huge list of mobiles I've owned over the years... Classic Chevys, Alfa Romeos, Subarus, Jeeps etc.

Some have been great cars and a joy to drive (my 1987 Alfa Milano rapidly springs to mind) and others have been... more challenging (my purpose built rock crawler-1984 solid front axle 4 Runner... fun to drive off road... on the highway-not so much... but that was my fault).

But the coolest car I've ever owned was a 1992 Subaru SVX.
Subies 003.jpg
Fully loaded with (real) leather, AWD and every option you could get in 92.
Subies 008.jpg
230hp isn't much in such a heavy car but it wasn't a dog either. I found it was much more stable in really crappy conditions than my wife's WRX... the results of a longer wheel base and wider track width.
Subies 010.jpg
This particular example was a low mileage, well maintained car. As a result of doing my homework prior to purchase; I never had a problem (save for normal maintenance) with her nor did she ever leave me stranded. Most owners had tranny problems with these cars due to driving around at slow speeds in OD.
Subies 005.jpg
Anyhow I can honestly say it was a pleasure to own and operate one of these unique vehicles. I wouldn't have sold it if I had a nice garage to put her in. She now lives somewhere in Iowa... about 16 months ago a kid rode an Amtrack for like 12 hours to purchase it sight unseen. Watching some other guy drive off in her was like watching my wife walk off with another guy... well not quite... but it hurt dang it! :sad5:

Hi Jeff. I like your 66 Land Rover.. I always have. I've seen one sitting behind a house here in Memphis and wanted to stop and look/talk to the owner a few times. what are the down sides of owning one of those? Parts hard to come by? How's the heater, keep ya toasty? What are the upsides of owning one? Thanks Jerry

Cool thread.

I have had a few too.
My first car was a '72 El Camino (never got to drive it) traded it for a Datsun 510 before I got my license.
Second car, and one of my all time favorite cars I've owned, (car I learned to drive in) '72 Datsun 510 1600cc, 4speed.
When I was 17 I traded the 510 for a '64 Chevele SS, 350sb with edelbrock tunnel ram, holley 750, 3500 stall, slammed, great car, good times!
Traded the Chevelle back for the 510 again. Then after having a car with power the 510 under went MAJOR mods. Now, I had power and handling! I made the 510 look much like the BRE Datsun pictured below except mine was blue and white (no red).
Traded the Datsun for a '72 Nova (I should have kept the 510). Sold the nova for $500.00.
'84 Toyota longbed Mini truck slammed of course!
1985 Toyota 4x4, (the last year with all leaf spring suspension). Great truck.
Then I had kids...there went the cool cars for awhile, had a 1982 Suburban, Ugly truck but we fell in love with suburbans, they are nice to have with 4 kids!
Several uninteresting cars later...
Now I have a blacked out 2002 GMC Denali XL, very nice SUV.
My wife has a Scion tC, it's been a great car.
and (for a short time) a really cool 1987 Mercedes 190E 2.3-16 Cosworth.
I sold it to get my Vair.
