found spacers on my front wheels, and howto rmv frnt drums

Post by Honda750Guy »

so i just jacked up the car and put it on jack stands. have the front end up. took the wheels off and they have these spacers on them. 4 on the passenger side and 6 on the driver side (pic follows). i got them off ok. now the drums dont want to come off. they are loose and spin on the drum shoes. i know they are not held in by a wheel bearing. i have soaked them in pb blaster and marvel aerosol... im going to try again to get them off. but they are on pretty solid somehow.... both sides have a mix of stock and new wheel studs....... let me know what you think...

In some cases a ridge forms on the ID of the drum - holding the pads in place. Using a screwdriver thru the slot on the bottom of the backing plate, loosen the starwheel on the adjuster. Then use a dead blow hammer to tap on the shoulder of the drum.

The drums are held in by the wheel bearings. You don't need the spacers. I made them and they were only added for back spacing with some tuner rims I had on the car when it was sold. Should have had 5 per side. I didn't replace all the wheel studs before I sold. The parts store only had a few and like I said, it was just to roll around my garage. Make sure you get 4 studs per wheel, length won't be a factor with factory steel rims.

This was very common way back in the early days of cars. It gradually became less and less common. Late model Corvairs are not that way, earlies are.
