$13 ebay electric fuel pump failed finally.

Today my 66 More Door failed to start due to lack of fuel. Troubleshooting and also pump sounds determined pump had failed. Pump lasted 34 months. 2 cheap $13 pumps gone in 7 years of operation, 1 to go and it is now installed.

This is the style of pump I setup for a quick change into my Vair. It looks like the AirTex E8016S pump and even has been sold online as a 8016S pump. But it is still a knock-off pump.

It still takes time, but I have the connector, bracket and mount isolation rubber pieces with the pump. Also, the pump inlet filter with fitting and outlet nipple are mounted to the pump.

After this one fails, I have a choice of 2010 Airtex E8016S pump or a Chinese made Airtex E8016S pump. The Chinese made pumps will be set up for a quick change out in the next month. They will be first inline. 2010 Airtex E8016S pump is already set up, as it was destined for my coupe. The coupe now gets an in-tank pump.

That one was given to my friend to install on his gold More Door a few years ago. Last year he gave the car to his nephew. Pump was never installed. I guess pump is in his boxes of Corvair parts for his other 4 door.

That’s a good deal…I have a $15 Amazon electric pump in my car…. Works silently and no problem in the past 2 years… I still have a spare in the trunk ready to go.

In 1989 I bought a 100% USA made Facet pump for $22, it's been in my engine compartment for 36 years, 3 engine rebuilds, 2 diffs and over 300,000 miles, You get what you pay for I guess. :rafman:

Hmm, in 1989, i did not need to buy electric fuel pumps for Vairs. I was driving a Dodge conversion van and a Toyota 4Runner.

I got my first Vair on the road in 2019. Days of reasonably priced electric pumps were over.

Now the days of Vairs and maintaining them are coming to an end. So no need to buy high priced pumps to see how they do. My Vairs will leave with the pumps I have bought for them. $13 external pump on the More Door and Ted Brown's in-tank pump on the Coupe.

LOL, I used a Facet Cube style pump from a early 70's Mazda rotary pickup that was being scrapped to pump solvent through my oil cooler. That one is likely over 50 years old. For the Corvair I have two, new "Genuine" Chinese pumps that have been used for some time without incident (but always carry a spare) as well as an ancient Bap Geon (with external transistor) and a new-ish Purolator. Anytime I see a Cube style pump $5 and under at swap meets I grab them.

The "Heart & Lung Bypass" in action. ::-):

A bit of late info.

I did find a way to almost eliminate the pulsating noise from the cheap $13 cylindrical pump on the More Door, following its last failure. The rubber I had placed at the mount bolt was 1/4" thick, but was a bit stiff. I placed a layer of soft 1/8" nitrile rubber on top of the 1/4" rubber and it deadened the noise where you can barely hear it. Plus a new pump noise level is much lower that a pump very close to failure. I had notice the last few months the pump pulsating noise had increased its intensity,

A correction on the failed pump's life. Pump lasted 57 months.

I did a pressure test on the new pump yesterday evening. At fuel filter location and engine not running, pump put out 3.8 psi. No more testing can be be done on this car, as I no longer own it.
