Absolutely!!!! Nearly impossible with out #4 phillips in socket and impact tool. See set on ebay https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=4+ ... noapp=trueFrank DuVal wrote: ↑Sun Dec 08, 2024 2:25 pm #4 Phillips bit in a socket.![]()

One of the best hand impact tools I have bought is from HF and it comes with Phillips bits!! https://www.harborfreight.com/6-bit-imp ... 64812.html
I recommend using a 2lb. brass hammer. First I'd soak those screws with penetrating oil. If badly rusted the screws may strip the thread plate or break off!
Re: Door screws.
I also use the manual impact driver. You hit the end with a hammer and it turns counterclockwise a small amount to break loose the screw. Because you're hammering the tool into the screw it's less likely to strip the Philips head. Ken

Since the tool works both ways make sure it will be removing the screw and not tightening it.

Good comment, changing the tools direction when hit is not intuitive! Depending on how the tool is set, it will either tighten or loosen when struck.RexJohnson wrote: ↑Mon Dec 09, 2024 9:46 am Since the tool works both ways make sure it will be removing the screw and not tightening it.
Re: Door screws.
I have a question: How do you use an impact driver and hand sledge when door is still mounted on car? Just curious.
Re: Door screws.
Good question. Being on the salt free/dry West coast I've only used the impact driver to get hinges off the doors. I remove the door hinge screws with a ratchet and #4 Phillips bit in a socket. I apply force to push the Phillips bit into the screw while moving the ratchet arm. This is AFTER a day or two of soaking the inner fender with penetration oil. Always worked, but maybe not in the rust belt areas.
Keep in mind the screw goes into a sliding plate that is ONLY about 3-4 threads deep!!!! Replacing that sliding plate if you strip it out is NOT fun.
Re: Door screws.
What I meant was: How do you gain access to remove screws using described tools when there's not much room while door is still on the car?

Re: Door screws.
If the ratchet doesn't do it, then it is remove the hinges from the body time.
