Help Identify Corvair A/C Components

Post by Rotary FP46 »

Still working my way through the collection. Will be for some time. There are A/C parts all over the place. I'm not intimately familiar with how the designs for these changed from model year to model year. Hoping you guys (and gals?) will be able to shed some light on each of these things as they pop up. This is likely to become a thread that continues to get new material throughout the Winter months.

Victims 1) and 2)

These two were screwed to a board so that they wouldn't get bumped into. Evaporators? Condensers? Early? Late?

3)

This thing. I'm not sure it's even Corvair. The possibilities are Corvair, C2 Corvette, or G-series Chevrolet van.

The first picture shows two 66/67 Corvair condensers. The second picture shows a typical condenser for a front-engine, water cooled "something", definitely not for a Corvair.

#4 is the same as #1 and #2, a condenser for a 1966-67 Corvair.

#5 is for a condenser for 1965, or earlier Corvair. The condenser mount bracket and fast idle actuator is for #5.

FYI...There is an 8 page thread over on Corvair Center that has details on some of the more obscure or lesser known A/C components. It is mostly LM stuff but still could be helpful during your part identity quests.

Dave - that is a great link to information you supplied. My 66 four door had "cutting torch" A/C holes, EVEN in the dash!!!!

When I added A/C to my convertible it took awhile to find all the "extra" parts.

If anyone would have an extra fast idle solenoid and the lever that attaches to the throttle cross shaft, for a 66 or 67, let me know.

wagonmaster --- there are two kinds of the "drivers side" fast idle solenoids. The original had on ONE leg attached to the top of the A/C fan shroud. Eventually were the solenoid was attached to the shroud, the shroud CRACKED from vibration and finally the solenoid AND metal from the shroud came LOOSE (I have a A/C shroud with a hole in that spot!!!!

The second generation solenoid added a second "leg" that bolted to the side of the fan shroud to fix the problem. I had one and it sold FAST even though it was in rough condition.

I may still have a first style "single leg" fast idle solenoid, but it's been a while and I'll have to dig through my parts. Frankly I would NOT use it due to the problem of cracking the shroud, but if you want it I can go look.

Do you guys have photos of both types? I can keep an eye out for those solenoids during the dig.

Wagonmaster posted pic of ONE LEG. The two leg solenoid looks the same, except for the addition of a second leg 90 degrees from the other leg.

I believe the lower right solenoid would be the later version with the extra support bracket.

6) Crate #1 of A/C Components

I'm sinking my teeth into this category of parts in earnest. Will take it crate by crate.

I haven't had a chance to delve too deeply into the CCF thread you posted, Dave. Will do so Sunday. Thank you for posting it.

Questions regarding the contents of this crate:

Which items can you identify?
Did Corsa A/C dash vents differ from model year to model year during the LM years?
Which production year did this compressor bracket belong to?
Refrigerant hoses. These are around 60 years old. I have more than are shown here. Are they useful - even as a template for the creation of others?

7) Crate #2 of A/C Components

Questions:
Which items can you identify? I see a dash vent, a spare tire hold-down, the cowl-mounted rain gutter, a compressor, and a receiver / dryer. Not sure which years any of these belong to.

The band clamp. Corvair, or other?

Note the model number and refrigerant hose routing on this compressor. See #8.

8) Crate #3 of A/C Components

Now note the model number and refrigerant hose routing on THIS compressor. The model numbers on the compressor in this crate and on the compressor in Crate #2 are identical. However, the refrigerant hose routing differs.

This is the first LM fast idle solenoid I've had my hands on so far. Somehow expected it to be smaller.

9) Wiring Harness

This harness was in another crate of A/C parts. From what you can see, is it A/C-related?

The knob on what looks like a headlight switch appears rounded. Thinking back to part of the discussion about the evolution of knobs on the radios and on stereo multiplex units, I'm wondering how late a LM this was originally a part of.

On the other hand, the ignition switch pigtail has barbs. Is this for a 1965?

#8 is a late model AC fast idle solenoid.

#9 looks like the under dash harness for a 67-9. That is according to the knob on the light switch.
