Sil-Glyde Which?

Post by Frank DuVal »

I see the comment "I use Sil-Glyde for that" all the time on forums. So which Sil-Glyde do they mean? aka Which one do you use? Lots of choices I see, even on Amazon. Brush, Tube, Tub, Ceramic... Lubricant, brake lubricant, technician grade....AAaaaaaahhhhh!

I do see it is an AGS product. I remember their first product, the white grease stick for door latches, etc. Shown in GM shop manuals, but with a GM label. American Grease Stick. I am currently using their DOT 5 brake fluid, not in stick form, though. :rolling:

I got my Napa Sil-Glyde from NAPA at the local NAPA store. The original Multi-Purpose Sil-Glyde is made by AGS. Though both are silicone, not all silicone greases are made the same nor do they have same specs and operating characteristics.

AGS Sil-Glyde at Amazon is $9.39. It is moisture-proof and heat resistant to over 425 degrees F (218 degrees C),

NAPA Sil-Glyde at NAPAonline is $13.49. Comment: This is the silicone lube you want to use solely on caliper pins. Safe around rubber boots or any rubber brake components. Also rated at a higher temp (-20 To 500 Deg. F.) than the original AGS formula.

Interesting, as Sil-Glyde is an AGS trademark and when you look for the MSDS on NAPA website it is the AGS MSDS.

I believe the Napa version is the same as the AGS brake formula Sil-Glyde
