Handling Fuel to Replace Fuel Tank in 1965-1969

Post by CorsaCharlie »

Replace Fuel Tank
After determining how much fuel is IN the tank,
Find a container big enough to hold it all.
If you don't know, then get several 5 gallon jugs to hold max 16 gallons if needed?
Jack car high enough to fit the container(s) underneath with room to direct the fuel flow in the container(s)
Use a larger pan under the container(s) to catch overflow when changing containers.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Step 1 Clamp neoprene (?) fuel pickup hose DOWNSTREAM of tank to allow directing flow of gas to stop fuel.
Step 2 Place container under far end of fuel hose, and remove clamp to drain into sufficiently large container
(there will still be about a quart or 2 in the bottom of the tank after draining from the hose)
~ After fuel stops flowing from the hose...
Remove wires from the fuel pickup mechanism.
Step 3 Lower PASSENGER side of tank ONLY (this will drain fuel from bottom of tank)
Step 4 Remove the fuel pickup mechanism from the tank (by turning the round "washer" holding it in.
(There's about a quart or 2 more gas below the fuel pickup)
I do this procedure outdoors if at all possible and always have a garden hose turned on and ready to spray within my reach as well as an ABC extinguisher. Old, stale gas is hard to ignite but fresh fuel can be quite dangerous.
BTW, this is posted in the Classified section under "Vehicles for Sale'" so it will auto-delete after 90-days. I'm not sure if it can be moved to the proper section. Scott?
