1968 / 1969 Powerglide ID VIN

Post by CorsaCharlie »

1968 / 1969 Powerglide ID is the vehicle's VIN and is stamped on the case "lip" on the driver side just below the linkage rod.
It is between the 2 pan bolts, and is readable only from above.

Interesting

By 1969 the VIN numbers were on a lot of items. There was the dash VIN that could be read through the windshield.

The VIN was on the engine block were the fan shroud cutout is and the engine "type" number was moved toward the center so you had to remove the fan shroud to see what the block "type" designation was.

When I took my 66 on a trailer to have it registered the young woman said "This car must be stolen as the VIN is missing". I showed her the VIN plate, but she insisted it had to be on the dashboard. Finally I got the manager to look who told the employee. "In 1966 there was no VIN on the dashboard". After that it went O.K.

Yes, the VIN was put on most major components to aid law enforcement and to show manufacturers whether a defective part was originally on THAT car?
