Does the VIN plate match the number on your title? The plate in your engine compartment is more of a spec plate describing body style, paint, and options. There is also a "hidden" VIN stamped on your front crossmember (I have yet to actually look for mine, maybe this weekend). Dennis

I don't see any mismatch between the Body Tag and the VIN plate. The body Production Sequence No: 29510 is not really related to the VIN Vehicle Unit Number 282317.

I will break down the tag codes for you...

Thanks for the information. The car is currenly red with a white top so I guess there has had some work on it. I also think may has a 65 enginge since the tag by the alternator is T1119RG

The engine serial number suffix code "RG" would indicate a 1965,1966, or 1967 95 hp engine. This engine would be fitted with a solid crankshaft pulley, instead of the harmonic balancer found on the 110 hp, 140 hp, and 180 hp turbocharged engines.

The 164 CID 95 hp engine has an 8.25:1 cylinder head compression ratio, instead of the 9.0:1 compression ratio found in the 110 hp engine. The intake and exhaust valve sizes, carburetors, and single exhaust system are the same in both the 95 hp and 110 hp engines. The 95 hp engine has a milder camshaft grind than the 110 hp engine. (The camshaft specifications can be found in the final sections of the attached 1964 and 1965 Chevrolet Corvair GM Heritage Center Specs. The 1965 and later engines were fitted with alternators instead of generators, and the magnesium fan bearing was larger in 1965 and later engines.

The 95 hp engine oil cooler may have fewer cooling fins than the oil cooler found on the high horsepower engines,

The cylinder head casting numbers will help you to zero-in on the actual engine model year. See page 5 of the attached CORSA Corvair Technical Guide 1+2 - Corvair Code Numbers.
