Big Bore Head Gaskets

Post by erco »

I've always used the Clark's recommended copper big bore head gaskets since I went to .030 overbore years ago, as Clark's said stock gaskets may cause detonation on overbores. Prices on copper gaskets have risen considerably, especially thicker ones. For .052 thickness, a set of 6 is now $53 (Clark's & Mikes) to $60 at https://californiacorvairparts.com/engi ... ts-52.html

I know those are reusable after annealing, but I have a large stash of NOS head gaskets I've never even tried. Some people have said they seal better than copper and IIRC effective thickness is ~.032.

Worth using or not? Anyone actually experience detonation running stock gaskets on overbores, or was this just a sales tactic from Clark's ?
