Please help me determine if this is even a part off of a Corvair, and if so, what it is and where it goes. When I started working on this 1964 Monza Spyder convertible, many of the parts were literally in a basket. I've already sorted out parts for other vehicles, lawnmowers, etc. I may be missing some parts also, but this looks like it might be for a Corvair. I've looked through the shop manual, and assembly manual, to no avail.
Where do I hook up the other end (rear) of the clutch return spring? The shop and assembly manual agree that it connects to the differential sleeve lock bolt, but mine doesn't have a "peg" extension on it, like it shows in the manual. Is there a variation? Lastly (for now), Where do the backup light switch wires run and connect? Wiring diagram was no help, and the assembly/shop manuals only show a switch that is activated by external linkage, unless I missed something. This replacement switch is just like the broken one I removed except the old one had the wires broken off. Guidance is greatly appreciated!

That part i am not familiar with. it might be some turbo specific item (I do not think do) but it is possible as my turbo speak is weak.

You are apparently missing the correct bolt with the "peg" for the rear end of the clutch return spring. A Corvair used part vendor like Corvair Ranch in Gettysburg, PA or Morton's Classic Garage in Nampa, Idaho might be able to solve that for you.

The backup switch wiring plugs in to the main body wiring harness inside the tunnel under the car about 1/2 way between the rear and the front of the car. Remove the tunnel cover and hopefully the plug is still there.

Now I'm getting somewhere! Terribleted, your description sent me in the right direction and bbodie52, the diagram sealed it. I found two broken wire ends (both blk/grn) sticking out midway up the underbody wire harness. Found 12v on one, and jumped it to the other, and had a backup light. I'll find out what is wrong with the other light. I have had good luck with the Corvair Ranch before so I will contact them for the clutch spring anchor.. I'll hang on to the piece of tin until I'm through, just in case. Thank you both!

T1961-65 Corvair 4-Speed Transmission Backup Light Switch (PN C9725)he backup light switch sticking out of the botom of the 4-speed transmission is simply supposed to orovide that "short" between the positive voltage source and the other wire, which feeds the voltage onward to the backup lights when the switch in the transmission is closed (transmission shifted to REVERSE). Sometimes the switch goes bad, or it gets damaged because it sticks down and can be struck if the car is driven over an object that hits the switch. Use the ohmmeter in your multimeter to check the tw wires for electrical continuity when the transmission is shifted to REVERSE. There is also a nylon washer that seals the threaded end of the switch to the transmission. Occasionally more than one washer is left there, moving the switch too low so it fails to be closed when shifting to REVERSE.




This wire leads from the 4-Speed manual transmission Back-Up Lamp Switch. It should be connected to the wiring harness and turns on the backup lights when you shift the transmission to reverse. The wiring connector for this switch should be located in the underbody tunnel. According to the shop manual the 20 GA. wire color is B/LG (Black with Light-Green Stripe).
