Barn Find.....Kinda

Post by Storm »

While I was perusing through the good old outdoors of craigslist, I came across a 1961 Lakewood. This particular Lakewood has been parked since 1971, inside of a garage that's kind of closed but not really 100%. So I kind of consider a barn find and kind of not. At first glance I passed it up to be honest. I wanted to try to find one that was ready to drive at a reasonable price, but I couldn't. After buying my 64 Monza, I developed a real love for the look of a four-door wagon. So I went back to looking at the 61 Lakewood, it's going to need new rockers new front floors and some small patching on the doors. The engine turns over but doesn't start. Needs new tires, I'm sure the brakes need done. After asking for more pictures of the rear suspension mounts, the came back just with surface rust, and after checking Clark's for new rocker panels and new floors. I decided to buy the wagon. So now I have a new project on June 1st when I pick the car up.

I haven't decided how to tackle it yet, whether to get the engine running first or patch the rust first. I figure it would be best to drop the engine and transmission out and then take the engine apart and clean it. Then once done cleaning put it back together, replace fuel lines and whatnot and see if I can get it to start. Obviously I'll change the fluids and what not, but then I wonder should I patch the rust first?

ultimately the first step will be to get the car back to Ohio from Minnesota. The second step will be cleaning the car. Then comes down to the third step of deciding what to tackle rust or engine.

I have the 1961 Corvair manual, a parts manual from 60 to 69. I need to get a hold of a 61 wagon body manual though.

Has anyone tackled restoring a wagon to drivable condition after sitting since 1971? And if so whom is willing to give some advice?

Pictures are attached, enjoy looking!

What part of Ohio you in?
Are you going to do any custom work to it?
