Sticky throttle...stronger return spring?? 65 Turbo

Post by drewvair »

I feel like the throttle return spring might be on the weaker side because I am constantly finding myself pulling up on the gas pedal to alleviate a high idle situation. The linkage doesn't seem to be binding on anything, but it never seems to want to return to "normal" unless I use my foot when driving or my hand when parked. Is there a stronger spring available? I tried poking around the forums and online and didn't really find much.

You may need to isolate each segment of the linkage, from the accelerator pedal to the carburetor to find the portion that is binding. Be sure to check the throttle butterfly in the Carter YH carburetor itself to make certain that it fully closes when it is released. Unless the throttle return spring is stretched or fatigued, installing a stronger spring may be asking the spring to overcome a binding situation elsewhere.

Throttle "sticking" ever so slightly.

Be sure to check the pedal pivot itself for binding as well as the bell crank under the left rear seat. These pivots can easily get stiff from a number of reasons. Like Brad said fully check every inch of the accelerator system from pedal to carb looking for binds or rods hitting things when moving (often bent a little).

I have the same issue, and I haven't found the exact place where it's taking place. I don't believe it's a spring issue though. Here's something that might help: http://corvaircenter.com/phorum/read.ph ... msg-573683
