I recently acquired a nice 63 Convertible. The build date is 12B which I believe is the second week of December (1962). Most of the glass including the windshield is coded CI which is November 1962.

Question: is it possible this is original glass; or, were/are reproduction units available with correct date codes?

I come from the Corvette world where repo everything is available with correct date codes. I just don’t know if that’s true in the Corvair world.

As a long term Corvair owner , I have never heard of date coded glass being available . Actually did not know it was coded . I suspect that you have original glass .

Rich - First as far as i know the only glass reproduced for the Corvair are windshields that come from S. America or China. So far I haven't seen any with reproduction markings, although a U.S.A. glass company just started making EM windshields. The rest of the glass can be found used, although some glass is getting hard to find, like EM convertibles, especially tinted. So yes your glass is most likely original, or original from another Corvair.

While a great deal of importance is placed on "numbers matching" for the Corvette, and some other cars, it is a minor issue for the Corvair. There are some Corvair folks who value correctness, and it is nice to see a well done correct Corvair. Today most Corvair folks just want a fun car to drive and you see a lot of modifications. This trend is growing according to the "old car industry". Younger folks want the look, but better brakes, A/C, radio, etc.

If you stay with Corvairs you'll learn the 1964 Corvair was revised with improved suspension and it's common to see EM Corvairs modified with installation of the revised rear suspension with the coil/leaf spring design. It finally cured the swing axle jacking. Note swing axles were an issued for most cars, not just the Corvair. The 64 design was very effective and a credit to the GM engineers. In 65 (LM cars) the rear suspension is based on the 63-67 Corvette design, but with coil springs and is well regraded.

Thanks guys. One of the reasons I’m enjoying my Corvair so much is exactly that. It’s not a Corvette. I’m not into the judging stuff and all that numbers matching stuff.

On the other hand, I am sort of a history buff and enjoy discovering things about my cars. This Monza Convertible was obviously cared for by its previous owners. The top boot cover is stamped “MFG 10 62”.

Our first Corvair was a 1960 4 door purchased as a used car in 1964. Then my father bought a new 1965 Monza Convertible. A 110 automatic. Then in 1968 when I was 22 I bought a used 66 Corsa Convertible. 140 HP. Should have kept that one!

I saw this 63 at Carlisle in September. When I got it home I was pleasantly surprised at the condition. Honestly I didn’t do a great inspection there. I just figured it would be fun to own a Corvair again. This one has been converted to dual MC and it has an alternator. Everything works. When I got it home I pulled the wheels to inspect the brakes which look almost new.

Corvair windshields are available with the correct codes. Summit lists them.

And what would be the correct marking on the glass of a 1967 Corvair? I don't know the exact model if it matters, but if it does, then I'll send my father an e-mail so that he can go and check.

Summit indicates NO windshields for the Corvair. If someone finds them then post a link.
