'66 Monza Convertible

Post by Bruins_Fan »

I've decoded most of this body tag, but I'd like the experts here to look! I'm also wondering if this engine looks to be original to the car? I know it was rebuilt probably 10 years ago. Some info I found says the RG suffix would be a 95hp, but I think it should be a 110 Powerglide.

Yes it appears to be a 95hp engine in your car.

Couple more pics of the motor. I'm probably mistaken, but thought the Monza would have at least 110 (this car has the 110 emblem on the hood, FWIW). I thought the 95 was found on the base model.

Yes but as many others have found. Motors get changed. Enjoy the car. That is the most important thing.

^Absolutely agree.

I don't own this car (yet), but would like to try to determine if this engine is the original motor. More just my curiosity than anything else.

While the air cleaner is marked "110 hp", it looks like the engine is actually 95hp, though I don't have the numbers off the heads to help confirm that info. I'm not sure if that can be seen easily without pulling stuff off the motor?

Does anyone know if the 110hp would always show as an option for a Monza on the body tag (i.e., as the PG option does)? Looking at the '66 specs from GM Heritage, the Monza could have a 95hp as standard, but I'm not clear if a Monza with the 110 would've shown that on the body tag.

T = Tonawanda, New York (GM Tonawanda Engine Plant)

0325 = Engine manufacturing date (month and date). March 25th.
RG
= 1965-67 95 hp, 164 CID, 8:1 Compression Ratio (CR) with Powerglide Automatic Transmission (Corvair 500/900 Monza)

I can't tell from the pictures, but a 110 hp engine should have a harmonic balancer on the crankshaft, while a 95 hp engine was originally fitted with a solid pulley, as shown below. The suffix code "RG" was found on 95 hp engines with a Powerglide automatic transmission originally installed in 1965-1967 500 and Monza Corvairs.

The difference between the 110 hp and 95 hp engines was an 8:1 compression ration cylinder head on the 95 hp version, and a 9:1 compression ratio on the 110 hp version.

1965-1967 95 hp cylinder heads (Non SMOG pump engines) would normally have one of the following casting numbers: 3856743, 3883862, or 3878569.
1966-1969 95 hp SMOG pump engines were fitted with 3880707 or 3880708 cylinder heads.
1965-1967 110 hp engines had cylinder heads numbered: 3856759, 3878561, 3878562, 3878566, 3883858, or 3883863.

The cylinder head casting numbers are found at the end of the head, as shown below. The numbers are often hidden by engine sheet metal shrouds.

The two engines also were fitted with a different camshaft.

The body tag would only reflect the engine if the engine required a body modification from Fisher Body. This was only true with the turbocharged engine, since a special cutout was needed for the turbocharged muffler on the exhaust system.

Looking at the body tag again on my car (yes, I bought it!) can someone help me with the F-3 on the third line?

I believe the 3 indicates a beige convertible top, but I'm confused by the F? The car has the Bright Blue interior and Marina Blue exterior. I know that matches the 722 and the R on the top right of the tag. Just not sure about that "F"!?

Thanks!

I did some more research, F = Marina Blue paint.
