Cool Tool

I frequent antique stores and always look for tools that I can use. At one store I found this little beauty.

Image

It is a thread chaser that does the common sizes in both coarse and fine thread from 1/4" to 1/2" bolts. I couldn't pass it up for $20, and it works great, especially for cleaning up those bolts you have to reuse.

Image

Just open it up, put the bolt in a couple of threads deep, and then with a wrench run it down and back.

Image

When you are done, you have nice clean and refreshed threads.

Obviously, smart, modern, highly advanced, people are behind that robust multi-thread chaser. :)

I had seen the threadmate before, but since I have a drawer full of taps and dies, I never bought one. This tool is just cool, and works great. Another tool I am always on the look out for are sheet metal clamps. They come in handy at work and when you are doing repairs to some parts and to sheet metal on cars.

I like them better than the vise grip clamping plyers, and I have them in small and large sizes.

Cool tools are Great !

I noticed you are repairing the door release unit as an illustration of the metal clamp. Do you braze it back together, or just nut and bolt ??

Since they were originally spot welded together I drilled out the spot welds I just clamped it back together and plug welded the holes. The trick is making sure you get it aligned right so that the mechanism is free. I took mine to work and blasted it in the media cabinet. Then when welded up, painted it black and covered the spring and shaft between the two plates in a marine grease to protect it from water.

Have had onne in my tool box for about 45 years. Not often used but indispensible when needed.

I have 2 different standard and one metric thread file like that. Great to clean things up since the diameter doesn't matter. I do like the OP's tool find. I want one!
