Should I do it fellas?

Going to make this question short and detailed as possible.
>Answered a Craigslist ad for a 1962 Corvair 4 door. Car belonged to his great grandpa.
>Car was parked in 1970 due to them falling for the Ralph NaTard conspiracy
>Was inside a barn for 20 years
>Land flooded and so did the barn, water got into the engine bay and engine
>Back window shot out by neighbor kid
>However, body is solid, underside as well, only a couple ugly spots. No visible holes in floors.
>Owner willing to help me get the title for it because he wants to see someone get it back on the road
>Accepted my offer to trade my Bersa 380 for the car

So my question is, should the flooding part keep me from saving it, or should I give it a shot?

I am mechanically able, have tools and repair manuals!

Thanks, and info is appreciated!

Just do it :)

Almost every car can be saved. Get a welder and be ready for years of fun!

Yeah I wouldn't hesitate. My 4 door has become more preservation than restoration, but I drive it every day and it's great.

Parts are cheap. Even if the engine is a boat anchor, you can probably find one to swap in if you don't get fancy. Depends on what you're comfortable with. Nothing you're going to do hasn't already been done on the forums.

Personally, I'm not afraid of mechanical, but bodywork is not my thing. Up to you.

If you don't need it as a daily driver for awhile, they're fun projects.

Only question I'd need answered to make my decision is, how high did the flood waters get? Engine and transaxle could be a stuck solid chuck of scrap, or a sleeping beauty waiting to awaken. Put a 3/4" wrench on the center crank bolt, cross your fingers, click your heels, and see what happens.

My '68 sat in a flooded storage space for I don't know how long. The only thing that was wrong with it is the gas tank, the brake lines to the rear, the tunnel covers, and the fuel lines were rusted out. All four brakes had rusted as well.

I'd say do it if you're planning on not making it a DD and you have the time to work on it.

:whoa: If you decide to proceed, perhaps you could document your effort photographically here in a continuing thread on the Corvair Forum, showing your findings and discoveries, your repair efforts, and the final outcome.

:dontknow: :tongue: :eek: :wrench: ::-):

Your progress reports would likely breed suggestions, comments and questions from other Corvair owners that could be helpful to you and to other Corvair Forum members as well!

I agree.

Here's my tinman style rocker repair. I refuse to paint the car so for now this will do.

So essentially you are paying around $300 for the car. My only concern is that he can get you a title.

Like the others said. Make sure the engine turns you will certainly be taking it apart.

Love the "tin Man" repair. I might have to do that as well, it would certainly continue the semi-steampunk look I am going for where all chrome will be copper.

Newer flooded cars are total junk, the water gets in the wiring and will forever make it unreliable.
These cars don't have much wiring to replace. But the engine, trans, diff are most like junk.
I'd say NO, lots of others out there cheap that are a much better starting point. my 0.02

I would never trade a gun for a car.
That said, a "flood car" would be nothing more than a donor to me.

How deep do you think the water got? Was it up to the lower pulley or the starter????? I would clean the fuel system & rebuild the carbs & see if it will start. How about posting some photo's of the underside & overall, we would like to see what you scored.
