Preserving rusty interior parts

Post by va3rjs »

Hi everyone

Sorry if this is off topic for the technical forum, but I know a lot of smart people hang out here!

I was pulling out the radio ( to get it serviced..just motor boats ) and I noticed a lot of the parts from under the dash (ash tray and bracket etc.) plated parts had rust forming on edges and around screws etc.....is there a prefers method to slow or stop this process......I know no ones sees this stuff but I would like to halt the further rusting but keep the asthetics.......

I was thinking of just a light fine wire brushing and some semigloss or mat clear of some kind......

Any thoughts?

Thanks
Bob

I am not that smart and fairly new to Corvairs but I have used several Eastwood products designed to stop rust and they seem to perform well. I am sure you could give them a call for advice.

This is an Eastwood product I used for that purpose. it comes with a wand for getting into places you can't reach. Here are a couple of pics inside the front fender and up in beside the dash.

I tried the black version and I have to say, it makes a mess. Idk if you had better luck but the want doesn't exactly cover as well as I thought. It's better than nothing though. Maybe just mist the back side of the dash with some wd then wipe dry?

For those plated items I have sanded off rust and clearcoated as well as painted such parts depending on how good they are after cleaning and rust removal. There are small plating systems around as well so they could be re-plated if you were into the trouble. There are also plating look paints.

Years ago I was in a pinch to make a show with an old Chevy and I just painted the "plated" parts with Rustoleum Metallic Aluminum (not chrome) paint #7715 ALUMINUM. It looks exactly like the original silver plate finish and after five years it looked better than the parts I had replated. Bottom line - I don't waste my time and money on that cheap original plating. I just clean up the part and spray paint it with the Rustoleum and it looks good and lasts. Even when I tell folks the silver bits are painted they say they look replated. The other issue is most shops now only do the "yellow" plating.
