Project Dolly Parton - My 61 Monza coupe

Post by Durdan »

Project Dolly Parton - because it takes a lot of money to look this cheap!

Started out as a VERY rusty 1961 Monza 4 speed car with no brakes and a rotted out gas tank. i drove it home using only the parking brake and a fuel jug in the backseat with a hose going out the window and to the mechanical fuel pump

Once i got a new gas tank in place and did some brake repairs, i got some new shoes for her

It was at this point that the brake shoes i had relined failed miserably, seized inside the drums, and ripped everything apart. I replace it all with all new stuff including making stainless braided lines at each corner. Overall, the wheel and tire combo had raised the car too much, though. Sooooooo.... it was time to make some terrible decisions.

Image
Image

yeah. that'll do.

kind of.

The car was now riding on the bumpstops and was ridiculous to drive. I had to carefully plan out my routes as to avoid any road with any sort of hazard, pothole, speedbump, and road crown. yes, the car even scraped on road crown. I rebuilt the carbs and converted the fuel system to electric pump.

Next came the body work. The pass front fender had a nasty smash in it and i wanted to fix it.

Image

there. fixed it.

It was at this stage that i drove the car for a while, fixing random things here and there. I put in a 15" red sparkle MQQN Eyes wheel, got divorced, went nuts, and moved to Texas for a year to handle my father's estate. The transporter that took the car for me ultimately ravaged my oil pan and ripped the electric fuel pump off the bottom of the car on a speed bump. It sat in my Texas driveway for an entire year going untouched. I moved back to my home in Tampa, FL, and once again had it transported home. I put her in a bay in my shop and didn't really touch the car for almost another year... until now.

Parts started getting ordered. New oil pan, another fuel pump, another carb rebuild kit, blah blah blah. While i waited on my financial ruin to come in the mail, i started getting after the interior. Since this car is unrepairably rusted, it rains inside whenever it rains outside. Replacing the floorboards would only mean that i no longer have holes for the watershed to leave, so i opted to keep my colander floors, and carpet them with mildew-resistant patio carpet.

i opted to remove the backseat and carpet over everything just to clean it all up some. the seats were so bad off, that a mere recovering wasn't an option. I was quoted $350 a piece just for the front buckets, so i started to check out my options. I went for this bomber bench from an ebay seller named Rotten Larry. He builds them to your dimensions. I figured, if i didnt like it, i'll just turn it into a back seat and do something else for the fronts. I actually really like it, so it stays.

it was here that the car sat

too low for its own good. but that'll change.

i started on addressing some engine issues i've had. namely, overheating if i drove it for more than 30 minutes. i sourced a later model mag fan from a buddy and got to pulling everything apart. i found that every cooling fin was caked with crap and my oil cooler was just covered in feathers and road gunk. i cleaned it all out, and got to painting.

Image

i also sourced a late model alternator bracket and went with an 80's style Delco alternator. swapped on the front half of a late model corvair alternator, and now i have reliable charging. i used home depot garden edging to make new engine skirts, and ran a large external oil cooler. rebuilt the carbs for the final time and installed a billet electronic distributor. All new stainless fuel lines to dress it up and an adjustable fuel pressure regulator.

the area under the oil cooler was cut out, a rock guard installed and an 8" electric fan set on top.

Next was addressing the wiring. I've chased gremlins the entire 5 or 6 years i've owned this car, so i decided to just do an entire re-wire. i used EZ Wiring's Mini 12 harness.

i also used simple 30A toggles to handle things like the lights and wipers.

After that, it was time to deal with the headlights that were dimmer than a candle in the wind.

I got these 5 3/4" replacement LED headlights that have a HI/LOW feature and at HI are rated at 2600 lumens! They were larger in the back than their sealed unit counterpart, so the buckets had to be modified. I also replaced all the plastic headlight adjuster things.

now that the car was rewired, the engine gone through and cleaned up, interior somewhat liveable, it REALLY needed to get the ride height back up a little bit. Eventually, i'll install air bags, but for now, i found these 2" poly spring risers on Summit Racing and they were just the trick to take up the gap that my cut springs just couldn't fill. The front of the car was where i wanted it, but the ass end just squat too much. i put them in, and low-and-behold, it's an even ride with actual suspension travel!

Image

i was off to take her on her maiden voyage. insurance and registration were updated and i drove her home! It was nice to be behind the wheel of my favorite death trap after 2 years. There is definitely something going on in my RF brakes, though. It snagged up when i reversed last night and locked the tire up at less than 10mph with just a faint touch of the pedal. BUT, she runs and drives again. i couldn't be happier.

Love it! Reminds my of my first drive - car sat for ~40 years, then I decided to just go on the freeway! No alignment, brakes pulled super hard to the right, but I managed to get where I was going(this was after overhauling the motor and brakes of course!) Great work, love the look of the rear wheels tucking, makes me want an EM :tu: best of luck with your project! Seems you worked on your car for two years before driving, that's about how long I've been waiting, congratulations! Sure is rewarding finally being able to drive what you've worked on for so long

PREDICTION: You will go far in this life as a Corvair owner! :not worthy:

Thank you for the creative and amusing summary of your sometimes crazy antics with that 1961 Corvair. I'm looking forward to reading more as you progress!

i installed a 'la cucaracha' horn, too, but it over powers the fused circuit in the EZ wiring setup HAHAHA luckily, this isn't a daily driver by any stretch of the term. My Tomos moped is faster and more reliable than this turd, but i love it and have done some stupid things in it. more to come, for sure!
