Re: Early 1967 Corvair Monza 110 Repair

First post of 2022! Congrats everyone, second year of Corvair ownership for this guy!

Really fell in love with the patina on the '65. Like.. Really fell in love with it..

Anyways, eventful day as we brought the '65 home. Rear window fell out (forgot to open the windows, oops!), though it would appear the area had already rusted. No idea of how bad the rust repair beyond the dash is going to be, got a 4 speed and a complete motor though! I wonder where the original front end went...

Will send pics on Sunday, going to be out of town later.

As Connor stated, we picked up the ‘65 on New Year’s Eve. We took the front suspension, wheels and tires from the 67 and installed on the ‘65. Fortunately my winch worked after sitting in the shelf in a box for at least 10 years.

He went out of town and back yesterday and we’re about to go outside and unload it from the trailer. It’s still below freezing here today and was 82 on Friday. I’m sure he will post pictures later.

I also have to say I really like the prospects for fixing up the ‘65. It’s got fantastic patina over the entire car. People pay a lot of money to reproduce the patina. The body is mostly straight. My plan in the future is to scotchbrite the car with CLR and use a matte-clear over the top. But first, the lower front windshield reveal is gone and will need repair. That is an easier repair for me than fixing all those huge body panels on the ‘67 which would also necessitate a paint job.

I suspect the car was taken off the road because of the windshield. Then the front end was removed and steering box. The rest is significantly complete and I’m optimistic it will run. Once in the garage, I’ll get Connor going on readying it to turn over.

Based upon buying a restorable car, we overpaid for the ‘67. However it is going to become an important donor for the ‘65. Connor is keen to name his cars, so this one is Lampasas because that’s where it’s from.

He really wants the ‘66 Corsa he found but our garage and plate are full right now. Something has to be finished or go before anymore can come in.

Thanks again for everyone’s hospitality.

Bummer. As in fell out on the road and smashed? What would opening the windows achieve?

The front window was not in the car. The reveal moldings were on the back glass and there wasn’t any rust through around the back glass so I assumed it was ‘stuck’. I believe if the side windows were down the air pressure on the rear window would have been reduced. We’d just gotten out on the road and I was easing it up to 55 MPh. I glanced in the rear view mirror in time to see the reveal moldings fly up in the air. I hit the brakes as I was going to go back and then saw the rear window fly up and crash to the ground and explode in to pieces. We were dog tired and should have looked it over better. Other than that we had a good day! :tu:

Ouch! You said it "exploded into pieces". Does that mean the rear window is made of tempered glass like the side windows? Unlike the windshield, made from laminated safety glass?

We renamed the car after getting a cover on it after finding a piece of bondo that fell out, looked like a Fishbone, so say hello to Fishbone, everybody!

(I wish Dad saw this but I had to tell him posthumously after the window decided it wanted to be glass shards ^^;)

(Pulling over, what we saw)

The car, despite all of the rust in the window sill, and the horrid interior, is actually surprisingly well off. I hope we can get to work soon.. Just need to clean the garage... Anyways, should I make a new thread, or should I keep this one and update title?

Currently just cleaning out the garage. Despite the amount of motivation I have to work on the car, the motivation to clean my workspace to work on said car(s)... It's just.. Not there for me. Any advice on how to power through the sludge that is sorting tools and moving stuff around? I just want to wrench on things haha

Hi Connor. I didn’t have much space to work with myself, so I rented a reasonably priced storage facility. Roughly 10’x15’, but have it nearly full of parts removed as well as donor parts from cars I stripped. Organized chaos in other words.

I’m looking forward to updates when the wrenching begins. Good luck!

Hi John! Today we actually cleared out 2 bays of our garage. We will clear the rest of a third bay, sort our tools out, and the Wrenching will begin! Almost sounds like a horror movie when I put it that way. I'm going to try to work on the car at least 4 days a week, homework not taken in as a factor. My hope is at least 3 days a week, as I'd like to have a functioning car titled in my name by the end of the year.

It sounds like you have a goal set. :tu: And I’m sure you’ll get the help, advice, and direction from the many who’ve been down the path that are tuned in to the forum, and possibly a local club in your area. Did you happen to get the Corsa yet?

Last weekend didn't turn out, planning on purchasing it this weekend, and picking it up once the white car is in the garage... Pending approval from family, of course.
