I have been a little distracted lately, by a very rare (around 200 built) 1973 V8 AMC Hornet Sportabout Gucci edition....It needs a little love but its very original, so rather than paint the whole car , I am going to repair the rust and just touch the paint up with a little faux patina

Welcome to Project Car Hell (http://www.autoweek.com/article/2012010 ... /120109941), where you must choose between two horric-yet-tempting project cars. Last week, we offered a fabulous opportunity to choose between three projects -- a V8 Pinto, a V8 Vega, and a V8 Colt
(http://www.autoweek.com/article/2013123 ... /131229913) -- and all of us in the Hell Garage felt a deep sense of satisfaction for a job well done.

After a few days, however, those downscale economy cars (quadruple the stock horsepower or not) made us feel a little grimy, so we vowed to find a pair of genuine designer-edition cars of the decade that brought us the greatest selection of designer-edition cars in history: the 1970s. Back then, oppressive government regulations meant that engines were no longer free to spew ocean-liner quantities of carbon monoxide out their tailpipes, and so American automakers opted to ink deals with famous fashion-design houses. We had a Bill Blass-versus-Mark Cross convertible shootout (http://www.autoweek.com/article/2012010 ... /120109941) a couple years back, but this time we're going all out with a pure Gucci-versus-Cartier matchup.

The AMC Hornet (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AMC_Hornet) was, in most cases, a sensible and fairly uninteresting American compact car of the 1970s… but in 1972, AMC hired Gucci (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gucci) to add some style to the Hornet Sportabout hatchback, and the Gucci Edition Sportabout (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AMC_Hornet ... Sportabout) was born. Featuring gorgeous beige, red, and green upholstery and door panels, fewer than 5,000 Gucci Sportabouts were sold during the car's two-year production run. Where, you ask, could we ever find one today? Why, in Topeka, that's where; here's a genuine 1972 AMC Hornet Sportabout Gucci Edition with a $1,200 asking price. Even by 1972 standards, this is some wild upholstery. We're pretty sure that you won't need the entire $1,200 to drive away with this car, based on this statement from the seller: "Make me an offer, you might be surprised!" That's good, because restoring the brightly colored seat upholstery to the correct Gucci standards is going to require a few bucks. Then there are the other details: "Needs front end repair and interior work. Has some rust. Engine has a little top end noise on the right side." Still, AMC V8 running gear is still easy to find, thanks to all the Jeeps that are still around, and the end result will be worth all the time and money… and more time and money...

This 1972 AMC Hornet Sportabout wagon was ordered with the optional Gucci package. Offered only in ’72 and ’73, this Hornet is one of 2,584 produced in 1972. – The Gucci package included: Gucci’s traditional green and red colors on an ivory background, with green bolsters on the seats.

– 87,018 miles on odometer The 258-cu.in. straight-six is running awesome. It has a great throaty growl and provides the wagon with some serious ‘Sportabout’. Work done by the previous owner before its trip to Texas included, new tires, brake work, new shocks all around and a Facet Posi-flow fuel pump upgrade/modification. The previous owner drove the car from Florida to Austin in Spring of 2016 with no problems at all. The car was originally a California car for the first 80,000+ miles. Garaged for most of it’s life. It then made its way to Florida in 2015 before heading to Texas in 2016. The only rust are small spots around some of the window trim areas, back and front bumpers and at a couple of ding areas on body. Glass is in great shape. The Hornet is currently registered as an Antique Vehicle in Texas but a simple inspection and registration change and it’s ready for daily driving. I purchased the car in 2016 with the hopes of starting a mild restoration. But other projects worked against me and it’s time to let someone else help preserve this beauty.

As mentioned the vehicle is running great but here are some thing you may want to address:
– The front passenger seat needs repair on the seam (see picture). This repair will require the seat cover to be carefully removed and have a professional repair the vinyl seam to maintain the Gucci integrity. The interior is worth every penny!
– Door and window seals/rubber need replacement. Specifically the rear hatch seal needs replacement. You’ll need to work with AMC specialist to properly source a replacement seal. If you garage the car, then you can get away with holding off on this work.
– AC currently does not work. It may be the simple control switch which operates the compressor clutch. This is what I was told when I acquired the car. The compressor shows to be R134a and is a replacement. The fan however is fully operational.
– Windshield washer reservoir is missing, pump and line are still there.
– AM radio does not work but I have not investigated it’s issue and it may be a simple fix.

...The two- and four-door sedan models were carried over while the Sportabout wagon received a new optional upscale "D/L" package. This trim package included exterior woodgrain body side decal panels, a roof rack with rear air deflector, and individual reclining seats upholstered in plush cloth. The Gucci edition wagon was continued for one more year with five exterior color choices. The "X" package was now available only for the Sportabout and hatchback...

Now doesn't that sound like something a Corvair owner and dedicated restorer would say, and something describing a car he respects and wants to own and preserve!

after a lot of greif, caused by a brand new Chinese carb, fitted by previous owner,( including dumping a load of fuel into the muffler causing a very loud bang) the Gucci now runs good with a rebuilt original carb from Rodley motors....now to spend some lockdown time (and money no doubt) on the bucket
