Preparing floor for new carpet
Re: Preparing floor for new carpet
The coated floor looks a whole lot better…like it might never rust again! . Nice job!

Here are the kick panel vent flaps. This was a big job that I'm proud to have completed.
I cleaned everything up actually painted them which wasn't necessary. I bought the replacement flaps from Clark's with the staples that didn't fit. So I used some copper wire instead.

Re: Preparing floor for new carpet
We tried to do everything right and only had a couple of runs we took care of. I'm concerned the paint is thick enough and it will hold up. I put three coats.
This was A LOT of work!!!

Thanks for all the replies.
What I'm wondering is there a more affordable version of the dynamite extreme sound deadener mat?
And how many square footage do I need?
Any help would be appreciated

Ok, leaning towards KILMAT. Anyone with me?

A friend of mine installed Rattle Trap Extreme in his ‘63 convertible. He said he bought the largest package and it was just enough and he used it all.
Looking online it appears that it might be around 50 sq-Ft.?

Re: Preparing floor for new carpet
Thanks for your input John! How can I see your rebuild project?
This weekend was somewhat if a failure. First off I got busy on other things on Saturday and was only able to work on Sunday. I feel under the gun as I want to get the car to the upholsterers to finish putting the seats in. And there not even done. I managed to get new lighbulbs and new switches in the dashboard and the dashboard in.
I had a brain fart and scratched some of my paint but I think I can finish it without to much of a problem.
Anyway. I'm pretty sure I can be done with my end of it by next weekend.

By the way, I found some cheap sound deadener from Amazon that's supposed to be as good as the other.
I need to make an order to Clark's and I should be good to go.
Headliner, new glove compartment cardboard, and window handle washers and foam.

Re: Preparing floor for new carpet
I do have an asthetic question. What about painting the trim to match the carpet to kind of set the white off? Maybe a metalic?

Re: Preparing floor for new carpet
I did Kilmat on my car. Right now, its mainly on the rear passenger shelf down to the bottom of the seat.
Instead of having a tinny sound, the rear sheetmetal has a satisfying clunk if I knock on it. I didnt really notice a drop in sound reduction, but the car is still too rough with air leaks, rattles and whatnot to notice a difference. I feel confident it is helping.
I bought the 36 sq/ft box, and while it was more than enough to take care of the rear of the passenger compartment, I will need another 36 sq/ft box to do the floor from the rear passenger footwell up to the "firewall" under the dash.

Dang that seems like alot. it seems like there was a guy who did the whole job with 36 Sq. Feet. But it sounds like you were being thorough where it counts. Could you share some pictures?

Great job on the kick panel vent flappers. A lot of work, but well worth it on a COLD day heading down the highway.
On painting the interior parts I found one issue is over spray settling were you don't want it. I use a box fan to PULL (not push) air throw the car and it works surprisingly well.

Re: Preparing floor for new carpet
I'll have to get some pics for you.
36sq/ft wasnt quite enough to do the entire car. Maybe 50 sq/ft? BTW my car is a LM, so maybe there is more "floor square footage"?
When I realized I was going to need a 2nd box to do it right, I did double up on some of the key areas. I'd rather add a little extra than to skimp and come up short.

That's a good point.
I'm trying to make a final order for the interior to Clark's.
I hope I don't forget anything.

When you are pricing mats, check on the shipping costs. I bought Dynamat from a company offering free shipping and it ended up costing less than the lower priced product plus shipping. The mats are HEAVY so shipping costs should be looked at.
