Cleaned up the underside. Scrubbed it with hot soap and water which shows the combo of red oxide and green dichromate primers. Along with the undercoating. It’s actually in really good shape, thought about leaving as is, but figured fresh paint would certainly protect the metal longer.

Repainted with red oxide, green dichromate, and a little undercoating and then covered with a coat of satin clear.

Thanks Norm! I keep telling myself that as I’m wrestling with the heater box this weekend!

Rebuilding the heater box entails alot of cleaning and time in the blasting cabinet. The results are worth the effort. No more smells with the heater on and great looking components.
I'm a little bummed out today as we had our first snow last night. The Monza has to be put to bed for the winter. That's what I will be doing this weekend.

You weren’t kidding about being in the same place! Is that POR-15 on the underbody? I had some surface rust on a few spots on the front and used some, and put a top coat on while it was still tacky. Dried really nice and solid.

Start a thread and let’s see some more of that ‘64!

Yes that is poor 15 that I did get some rest prohibit her and then two coats of poor 15 and I’m just about ready to start rebuilding my engine got everything back from the machine shop so I’m excited

Tell us about your engine build. Give us the specs. Putting an engine together is great fun.

The heater box is overall in good shape, but you’re not kidding about cleaning!

And the insulation material just crumbles away to nothing, so definitely needed to be replaced. It’s too bad the only way to really clean out all that insulation is to drill out the spot welds to split the case.

Por 15 and rust prohibitor

I used POR 15 on my undercarriage and suspension as well. The products worked well for me.

That’s the stuff. Anything where the metal has holes or is just about to break through needs to be cut out and new metal welded in, but if it still has strength then POR-15 seems to be perfect.

This is the felt from Clark’s installed, after I cleaned up the inside. I’d expect it to last a lot longer than the natural jute it replaced. The glue they provide with the felt is the same glue they have for the dash pads and other interior parts. It works well, and I think a little easier to work with than the 3M Trim Adhesive spray I’ve used before.



Here the main box, it cleaned up nice. And the two flaps still work fine, the rubber is pliable and they move freely. On the few bare metal spots, I’ll add a little paint or some undercoating to match the factory undercoating on it.
