Re: OPGI Catalog Delayed

Post by bbodie52 »

I did a little browsing on their "Corvair" website. High prices. Lots of generic accessories. Some ridiculous listings. Gear oil is incompatible with Corvair manual transmissions.

Original Parts Group offers thousands of 1960-1969 Corvair parts and accessories, with new parts added daily. Our extensive catalog offers nearly everything from sheet metal, chrome and upholstery to engine parts and the hard-to-find details to finish a restoration with show-winning attention to detail. Our prices make that restoration more affordable too! Shop online and be sure to order your OPGI 1960-1969 Corvair parts catalog today!
I don't know where OPGI gets their ideas from, but the average Holley 4 barrel carburetor that has been fitted to a Corvair successfully is rated at 390 cfm. This Holley Terminator EFI 4bbl Throttle Body Fuel Injection system is rated at 950 cfm and "Fits V8 engines from 250-600 horsepower" is an unlikely candidate for a Corvair. At $2,059.59 it makes for an expensive experiment!!

NOTE: When ordering parts from a source like OPGI or Clark's, it is often possible to save quite a lot of money by consolidating all of your needs into a single combined shipment. For example, a combined shipment of an air filter and a mechanical fuel pump together from OSGI and Clark's using USPS Priority Mail compares as follows...

Image

ORDER SUMMARY
Parts Total $124.98
Sales Tax $0.00
Shipping $25.34
Insurance $4.45
TOTAL $154.77

ORDERED SEPARATELY: $164.70

Image

Parts Total: $74.50
Est. Combined Shipping Cost $ 14.15
Grand Total $ 88.65

ORDERED SEPARATELY: $96.10

Generally, the more items you combine into a single shipment, the more you save over many individual item shipments.

Sounds like they are selling a fuel pump for a small block Chevy with that description.

I'm not waiting to buy parts from OPG. I'll be surprised to see the catalog this year! From what I've seen on the website there isn't anything to get excited about.

I wonder if they will have a presence at Pittsburg.

Specialty Corvair suppliers like Clark's Corvair Parts have decades of experience and knowledge developed from focusing their special interest on Corvairs since 1973. You won't find that from the parts counterman at the local auto parts store, nor will you find that Corvair knowledge and experience backing up the technical writers and researchers behind the information loaded in the local generic auto parts store printed catalog or on-line computer database the clerks rely on. Most of them don't even know what a Corvair is!

Very few Corvair items will be found on local store shelves or in local inventory. It the correct item is even listed for your Corvair it will often be delayed while a special order is processed and shipped from the warehouse facilities. When it arrives it may or ma not be the correct item for your Corvair. After multiple trips to the store counter you may end up processing a refund and then ordering from a Corvair specialist to get the correct item(s).

Finally, local auto parts stores have a wide range of generic nonspecific automotive retail customers to keep them in business. Corvair specialists like Clark's depend on Corvair owners exclusively who supply the limited market to keep them in business. Without these Corvair-specific vendors, where would the Corvair owners of the world be? And don't forget about the limited reproduction items arranged and contracted for by Clark's, or even made by Clark's like upholstery and carpeting, gaskets, and other critical components that would simply be unavailable if that special effort were not made by vendors like Clark's! We need to keep them alive and profitable by focusing our orders on them, whenever possible.
Otherwise, we may ultimately be...

Don't be tempted by the "convenience" of your local auto parts store. Be a good Corvair customer and support these and other established Corvair-specific vendors!
