I make a point to pre-torque test each head stud before assembling the crankcase. I do this with a piece of tubing and 2 flat washers. I would rather have a stud pull on a bare crankcase, than down the road when the heads are going on. :assault:

As far as the original post about head nuts. Living in the South West, there is little stud or nut corrosion. I have been building street engines
for decades. Re-using good original head nuts has never been an issue. Then again... I have a box full of excellent original head nuts to select
from.

Dave,

Pre-torquing sounds like a REALLY good idea. Next time......

During my last rebuild I skipped testing the head studs because none turned loose during disassembly and the block was from the West coast and there was NO corrosion. Well ------ A top stud on the end pulled out at a mere 15 ft. lbs. on assembly with ALL the aluminum threads on the stud - AHHHHH! So off came the head, cylinder, piston to install a Time Sert (Ray Sedman at American Pi has the one with the correct depth). Murphy's Law!!!

Took it for a drive this evening...... sounds like an E-Type Jag with a sweet snarl at top end. More than I expected!
