Rear housing is being upgraded this week, I went in and re-sealed the offending bolt, driving it to work the rest of this week. Pulled out all the plugs and checked em out...look pretty good, can see the cylinders that are running a bit leaner due to secondaries pulling vacuum even when shut. Not too lean, though. I'm thinking of driving it to a company-sponsored engineering dept BBQ in Salem tomorrow. Gotta get myself set up with a few tools, a bottle jack and the right wrenches to change a tire, just to be prepared. Was fun to drive to work today. :D

I got my rear housing back, looks great! Got a 24 degree timing tab, and both engine-housing and housing-alt-oil filter adapter mating surfaces resurfaced, put it back together, primed the oiling system, and fired her back up, didn't even need to re-adjust the timing! This weekend, i broke my DD ford escort, forced to drive the Corvair to work this week....bummer. ::-):

So..pictures are worth a thousand words...
Image
"The evidence" All I need to get cracking on that cracked rear housing that started leaking again. Club member gave me "new" rear housing with 24 degree timing tab on it. Here it is after being re-machined for fabulous oil pump clearances, and both engine to housing and oil/alt adapter to housing surfaces re-machined... and he also counter bored 2 bosses for my crank angle sendor pick-up. Very cool. New set of Clark's pump gears go in as well. He welded the idler gear pin into place so no possible leak around the press fit.
Image
This one shows the 2 bosses relieved so the pickup will clear the balancer.
Image
This one shows the oil gear idler pin welded shut. By the way, I HIGHLY recommend this service should you need to work on your rear housing.
Image
Engine to block mating surface re-surfaced. Oil passages also got clearanced and ported for better flow.
Image
Old engine to housing gasket came off without a fuss from block. Oil filter adapter gasket not quite so easy, had to work to get it all removed from adapter.
Image
Mostly put back together, I need a better camera....
Image
Oil/alt adapter reinstalled. The rest of the story is in the prior post. Started without a fuss, timing right on. Driving it this week since i put my DD Ford Escort in a coma. I'll drag it to a shop with the tools to check crank angle/camshaft position sensors and such to see what I screwed up.

Looks good my friend, its too bad about the Escort but at least the vair is a nice consolation price.

My Escort is 18 years old, it's on it's 3rd engine, cause second one was junk, still putts around pretty good, but no fire now.It gets good mileage too. I'll be considering a remanufactured engine for it in the next few months, I like not having a car payment.

Driving the Vair to work all this week has been a blast... it's running a bit better all the time. Getting my Escort towed to the garage to be tested out to see what isn't working and to have the A/C drained, as the compressor seized up a couple of weeks ago. Hope it didn't grenade through the entire system.

Prelininary diagnosis on the Escort is camshaft position sensor... Meh, gotta pull the intake manifold to replace. I just did that... on a more positive note, driving the Corvair to work every day is just a joy. Looks like I'll be going to the CORSA Oregon meeting this Wednesday to pimp the NW Art and Air festival Corvair-only car show, in conjunction with a pre-75 open and a Corvette-only car show...I hope we can out-number the Vettes this year!

Well... been a while since I posted here. I killed the Escort and took $300ish to revive, and it still missed upin start-up, found coolant disappearing into a cylinder as the cause, so bought this.
Image
It needed a bit of work replacing a plastic body panel behind passenger rear door, so I took Corvair out of garage to work, and took it for a spin to warm it up fully and noticed a squeak that had been popping up was now worse, suspected passenger front wheel bearings. Finally got around to jacking it off the ground and sure enough, it is the bearings. I will bet 2 new sets for both fronts this weekend as Friday is pay day. I also replaced the steering box pitman shaft seal as it was puking some grease out of the steering box past the seal. I couldn't feel any slop in the output shaft, so I hope it was just the seal gave up. I'm getting a new Delrin pitman arm bushing from DaveMotohead off the Corvair Center forum, self-lubricating which is good and I'll swap that out as well.
Winter plans for Corvair include re-splatter painting the trunk, R&R the dash to see if I can fix clock, fabricating a plywood piece to fit behind back seat for 2 6x9 speakers, covered in black carpet, fatMatting the firewall area behind rear seat, getting wide band O2 sensor installed and blocking off fresh air hose outlet from turkey roaster andhole in firewall with more DaveMotohead supplied balnking plates, and R&R the power train for clutch, PP, pilot bushing, input shaft seal and TO bearing, and inspect flywheel to make sure it is a riveted unit.

Not sure I have enought to do yet. :whoa:

I strongly recommend using a quart of Zolatone spatter finish over any rattle can solution I have tried. I use a cheap $10 HVLP gun from Harbor Freight. You can shoot for a minute and wait for the compressor to catch up if you happen to only have a small air compressor.

Zolatone does not need a clear selaer coat and it covers small imperfections quite well. It's about $45 a quart but that is cheaper than a few cans of rattle can spatter spray and a spray can of sealer on top.

Looks better than my rattle can stuff turned out. Brownish tinge bled through even though I used a sealer/primer coat before painting. :/ Wish I'd seen this before I started. But, at least it's all back together, no more squeaky wheel bearings, but took it for a spin in the cold and heat lever did nothing when pushed, so I have something more to add to my list of stuff to do this winter. Sure was fun hugging the corners, it handles way better than my DD Saturn Ion. Next is replacing my pitman arm rubber bushing that is disintegrating with a Dave Motohead-produced Delrin bushing, and this winter dropping the drive train ro replace the clutch and PP, and TO bearing and since I'm in there, the pilot bushing and input shaft seal.
