Clarification on Dual Exhaust

Post by bobg1951chevy »

This question was asked before, I am unable to find the discussion.
Mine is a '69 110 / PG / Unit # 2671.
If I order dual exhaust, will there be a fitment issue to manifolds, being that duals were not offered on the 110, but were offered on the 140 ?
Thanks.

The link above will take you to the exhaust section in the Clatk's Corvair Parts online catalog. Each of the exhaust systems offered on those pages has a separate part number for standard Corvair engines (102 hp, 95 hp, 110 hp, etc.) or 140 hp only. The 140 hp exhaust tubes and manifold output has a larger cross-section than the other engine configurations and uses a different exhaust packing diameter that is unique to the 140 hp engine. Dual exhaust systems can be fitted to any non-turbo engine. Just order the components for Corvair (all engines except 140 hp or turbo) or 140 hp only.

Would it be safe to think the WELDED SYSTEM will bring the tailpipes out correctly ........ or would it be a better thought to purchase the CLAMPED SYSTEM, to obtain a good alignment of the tailpipes, as they exit the body ?

Can anyone tell me, from experience, whether the CLARKS WELDED EXHAUST SYSTEM, when mounted on a LM ......... will the positioning of the tailpipes be the same angle and height, when comparing the left tailpipe to the right tailpipe ?

The tailpipe angles will not be the same right to left. They will be like the factory duals which were not the same left and right. The mufflers mount at somewhat different angles and therefore the tailpipes sit a bit differently on each side. I highly recommend A complete Clark's dual system with hangers, heat shields etc. I have installed their welded once before and it is fine, but, I usually buy their clamped system as I can tinker things just a little and also like the cost better.

In this thread, I have spoken of not wanting a bad looking exhaust system.

PICTURE I WANTED TO SHARE WILL NOT DISPLAY HERE ......... SORRY. :-(

This pic in facebook accurately pictures what I do NOT want to happen.

I have always been in favor of hand fabricated systems, single or dual, using pre-bent tube &/or bender fabricated pieces. Using OE hangers where possible the system can be made to fit tremendously well & outlets can be fashioned & placed where you want and symetrical side to side (duals).

disclaimer: it"s what I did for a living years ago.

In my area I have a muffler shop that specializes in custom fabricated exhaust system. The finished product that comes out of that shop are nothing short of works of art. The bonus is that the cost of those works of art is quite reasonable. If you can find a similar shop in your area use them. Not every "fits just like stock" aftermarket product does.
