5-Speed conversion?

Post by mikeym »

Hi, guys!

I understand that there is a 5-speed conversion out there. Is it compatible with a '66 Saginaw? Is it any good, durability-wise?

Thanx!

:welcome2: Welcome to the Corvair Forum!

The five-speed manual transmission you referred to was a replacement transmission that was in limited production, was problematic and expensive, and is no longer available.

There were less than 20 made. Kent Sullivan knows where most of the went or are located. Kent has stated that they have no plans to make any more.

If you're just looking for lower revs at highway speeds, you could go to a 3:08 to 1 diff ratio. That would be a lot easier than trying to adapt a five-speed transmission to your Corvair.

With The World's Only 5 speed!

The new AMERICAN BOXER R&D, LLC 5-speed, based on the venerable Borg Warner T-5, is a giant leap forward in getting the most out of your Corvair. From mileage to performance you haven't experienced anything quite like the feeling of shifting your Corvair into overdrive.

The transmission is available as a complete unit and is sold with the custom mounting bracket, shift linkage, and all necessary installation hardware included. You can contact us directly by calling Linn Richardson at (425) 485-9807. Or send inquiries by e-mail to: aboxer@juno.com.

It certainly was not a bolt-in solution like we all wish for. The tranny sticks through the back seat and look how high the shift rod is located.

The above is what I did on my 65 Monza. I used a 62-63 4 speed for the lower first gear, and with a 3.08 diff it makes for a very nice freeway cruiser. Thanks to Craig Nicol for the suggestion years ago. :tu:
