LM Cooling fan ?

Post by acarlson »

I would like to return my '65 cooling fan back to it's original color. It looks like it's been painted at least twice - once silver and again after that - black. I've kind of poked around the net looking for examples but it looks like changing the fan color is one of those changes that many owners like to make. Here an example from Mike's Corvair Parts:

So, 2 questions:

1. What IS the stock color of the LM cooling fan ?

2. What is the best way to get the old paint off the magnesium fan without damaging it ?

Thanx -

They do not look like much:) Probably why people paint them at some point.

Probably so. Mine is a combination of silver (maybe aluminum) paint and black paint. Just depends on what has worn off. I'm going to clean it up - hopefully back to the stock dull grey.

Thanks everyone.

Magnesium does oxidize so it has to be painted. The grey color was the GM original paint and it was durable, not sure what they used. A lot of folks go with a durable gloss finish since it is easier to wipe clean. Painting over magnesium can be troublesome. If the the original grey finish is good, then paint over that.

I have had good luck with Duplicolor wheel paints in spray cans applied directly to glass beaded fans. They have a dark grey metallic I like.
