Can't stop with just one?
Can't stop with just one?
A Happy Easter holiday to all.
Corvairs may be a bit like potato chips in that it seems its difficult to have just one.
Just bought a 'garage/barn find' 1963 four door automatic with a single additional factory option; an oil bath air cleaner.
According to current owner it has not run in at least 10 years.
Alleged to have about 34K miles. And new, (ten years ago), tires.
C/O indicates engine turns but he didn't try using the starter.
Nice interior and exterior. Seems fairly complete.
Thinking this one keep as close to stock as reasonably possible.
Does the front bumper look like it got tweaked a bit?
Comments?

Re: Can't stop with just one?
Appears VIN indicates its a 700 model, that wrap around body trim suggested that too.
The dealer referred to it as a DLX or Deluxe. Car companies; add a piece of trim and call it a 'deluxe' model.
Should be a fun car.
Will pick it up with a trailer/dolly and drag it to CA when I get back on leave in late April.

Nice find. It ought to make a fine family car or daily driver. I would keep it stock too. Good luck and safe hauling.

Re: Can't stop with just one?
Hey Ed,
my '64 is just so far gone and every system is so worn that I just don't feel bad about configuring it with some modest updates/upgrades. Maybe even A/C later.
Even though this new car isn't very rare or unique, it seems very complete and in good original condition. This '63 seems like it should stay as close to stock as reasonably possible. I may even get it an OEM style battery.
Will try and post some pics when I get it to CA.

Maybe its just the pic or maybe just me eyes.
The driver side looked a bit higher than the pass side.
The '64 is a bit of a project. I hope to have this '63 on the road ASAP.
Thanks for the second pair of eyes.

Re: Can't stop with just one?
Thanks.
Hoping to do it justice and make it a very well running car but keep it very close to original.
I see a little rust on the wheels. Have to see what can be done without painting them and loosing the originality.
Getting it road worthy is the first goal.

Re: Can't stop with just one?
Thanks.
Most of the team cut out last night and won't be back until Tuesday.
Long weekend. Catch up on some admin stuff and maybe watch a couple of movies.
Looking forward to leave starting the 27th. Should be able to pick up the '63 before May 1st.
What a time capsule. Should probably pick up one of those pork pie early 60s hats. But nowadays the guys that wear those are typically hipster idiots, so maybe not.

Re: Can't stop with just one?
Nice car. Looks like a front bench seat and I think that was standard in the 700, I could be wrong. So many of the 500 and 700 cars were destroyed for parts that now they are unusual. I'd keep it original. Check with Clark's for the original style upholster, if needed.
The oil bath air cleaner option indicates it may have been ordered in farm country in Kansas (dusty roads back then). The dealers like to sell that option in rural areas.
Yes a lot of Corvair folks have more than one.

Re: Can't stop with just one?
Agreed. Not just stock but as much as possible will try and keep it original. Will rebuild parts instead of replacing them.
Quirky option, but an interesting one. Had a '54 Chrysler Windsor that had one, I think.
Are OEM style plug wires, rotor and cap still available? Factory-like in appearance?
May have to look for stock style tires too.
Two Corvairs is probably my limit.

Re: Can't stop with just one?
Some of the aftermarket distributor caps are now blue or gray, but I think you can still find the black caps (Clark's?).
Be careful about the spark plug wires. I've seen the original style replacement black wires for Corvairs, but the boots were too small and flimsy and the air pressure would blow them out of the shroud holes. This was years ago, maybe now you can get a decent set. If anybody would have a decent looking OEM set it would probably be Clark's. Others here may have a source for you.

Sounds right. Will check out Clark's site for the items. Hopefully there are some that are at least stock appearing.66vairguy wrote: ↑Sun Apr 16, 2017 9:32 am Some of the aftermarket distributor caps are now blue or gray, but I think you can still find the black caps (Clark's?).

Going to take a close look at the components to see if any are still serviceable. If any are already replacements, not a problem with swapping them out. But if any are original and check out as serviceable by the numbers, then I'll try and keep them not he car.
Clark's is one of the places that surprises me that they haven't/don't/can/t source a 'rebuild kit' for these mechanical fuel pumps.

Some pics of the '63 as it arrived in CA.
Of course its going to need more attention than expected. That was, well, expected.
