What's Missing? Transaxle drips-
Hi Corvair Forum!
Can you please tell me what am I missing, a plug bolt? A bracket? It's my 65 4-speed. My expensive gear oil is coming out.
Thanks for helping me! Again.

There is a gasket under that check ball spring bolt. Has it could be leaking from there

Hi-I'm talking about the open threaded hole on the bottom tail section near drain plug. I found the check ball spring on the side and higher up. Something must go there. Am, I lost? Yes.

Re: What's Missing? Transaxle drips-
that is not a drain plug. It is a shift fork detent ball and spring under the nut in your photo. Regardless it has a seal and if it has not been changed it may be your leak. The round hole looking thing near that nut on most transmissions (including the 65 4 speed) is where the back-up lamp switch screws in. What is in that hole in yours? That could also be your leak. Perhaps someone removed the switch and screwed something in its place that does not seal well, or the car was not equipped with B/U lamps and switch and what ever the factory used to fill the hole is leaking. I have never seen one without a switch.

Thank you, TerribleTed. I suspect that I need the back-up switch you mention and will correct. Also, I'll check the seal on the shift fork detent.

Thanks bbodie52, that is an expensive little switch. I suspect that I'll rummage through the parts boxes that came with my car for it, broken or not. Do you know the thread type so that I can block off if I don't find one?

I found it, fixed it, it works! What an expensive little switch hiding all greasy in a variety box of rusted, dirty parts. Treasure hunting.

Re: What's Missing? Transaxle drips-
TerribleTed, I pulled two whitish, plastic seal/gasket pieces out of the mounting hole with my finger. They are complete, was going to try and figure out how they assemble. If you know, please share. Thank You!

Re: What's Missing? Transaxle drips-
No idea why there would be 2. Clark's lists a seal(as in one), the shop manual mentions 1 gasket when replacing the switch. I think this was a whitish plastic seal.

Re: What's Missing? Transaxle drips-
Good news! Today after work I'm going to clean up the affected areas, use the one best condition white seal and stop my gear oil drip and have a back-up light switch for the road. Thanks again, TerribeTed. Checked out you car restoration stuff on FB, pretty cool!
