The spare motor is mostly assembled. I need to attach a non-ear-splitting exhaust, set it on the ground, mount all this to a transaxle, and see if I can start it. I need to find my half valve covers too so I can get the valves adjusted.

Suggestion. Before starting, remove the distributor, ( mark #1 position before removal) Attach a drive assembly to a drill motor, (shaft from an old distributor, with gear removed) then use the drill motor to pressurize the oil system before starting. This usually only takes a few minutes and can save some headaches.
If you also attach a continuity lite from the positive battery cable clamp, and then to the oil pressure switch, when the light goes out, you know pressure has reached this point.
Another suggestion, while pressurizing the system, crank the engine with a wrench on the crank shaft to make sure oil has moved throughout the entire system.
Sometimes you can spot an oil leak before a really big mess is formed.

I like the continuity light idea. Hadn't thought of that one before.
This was a motor that I had run before so I already knew that oil pressure should be good. All I did was replace head gaskets and rethread a bunch of case studs.
Priming is obviously a good idea... but I'm lazy. :)
