Really dumb question re fluids

Post by frez »

Hi everyone boo so as my first old car and experience with auto work I am learning a lot and making great strides. I got the car up on the stands, I swapped out the points for the electric ignition and the matching coil, changed the shift coupler and adjusted (shifts great now), changed the oil, put on a new aluminum oil pan with cork gasket (most my oil leaks stopped) still have the occasional drip from the bell housing and an occasional leak from the transmission both which I will work on later on. Which brings me to my questions.
1) I am half a quart too high on my oil when cold) no leaks just a little high do I drain some out of just leave it?
2) at the very end of the car behind the oil pan is another plug what is that for? It is the last thing under the car before you get to the bumper
3) my transmission fluid was leaking now after all I did above has almost stopped it is coming from around the shaft. Great that my garage is dry but I am afraid that is because it is low maybe. I have the sae 80
From clarks. When I check the axel dip stick (per the manual) all good (dirty but good level) how do I check the level of the transmission fluid? I see the plug to add it under the car but where do I check it? And does the car have to be level to do so I.e. On four stands vs just lifting the back or one side? How is the axel level and transmission fluid connected when it comes to using the one to gauge the other as in the manual. I am sure I am just missing something simple here.

Thanks and in case it doesn't show up in my signature. 65 monza convertible with a 66 CORSA turbo 180hp

Just kidding,
(1) don't worry about the 1/2 quart of engine oil (engine oil right?)
(2) That isn't a plug (just a bolt) it helps retain the engine "skid pan" in place
(3) There is a large plug on the drivers side of the transmission that should have a red tag around it (look in the owners manual or shop manual). There is a small passage that maintains a balance between the trans and axle. It is designed to keep more fluid in the transmission so if a leak develops in the axle the trans is not run dry.

Good job on the signature line (big help!)

Guys another question so I just changed my oil snd pan so it is clean and new, no leaks. However I have dark oil dripping from the bellhousing.
1) I assume this is the gear oil that goes in the transmission and axel, right?
2) Is there a difference in the phrase rear main seal leak and bellhousing leak?
3) there are also a few drips of what I would assume is grease as it is greenish coming from the trans where on the are the coupler attaches to. Should I do anything about that.
