SWC Corvair

Purists look away!

Just saw this thread, couldn't resist posting. I have had a similar idea for a long time for my "Dream" Corvair. Here is the basic concept for my Super Wide Corvair (SWC). LM 'Vair body, C4 or C5 Corvette frame, aluminum LS V8, Porsche Boxster 6 speed transaxle.

I have seen several guys swap 'Vette suspension components. Looks like ALOT of fabrication & machining. Also very tough to get the proper suspension geometry. I am not a machinist, but I did paint/body work for 10 years. Much easier to me to cut a 'Vair body right down the center, widen to desired width, weld up & bondo smooth! (Will be necessary to build a "jig" with telescoping square tubing to keep square. Use lexan widows. Everybody will have their opinion, but to me I keep the traditional V8 'Vair flavor and gain the 'Vette suspension, brakes & steering. Really cool is that I can space the body out as wide as I want for any wheel/tire combo!

Pictures that follow; I first took an old model & cut down the center. Widened about a 1/2" with scrap styrene. Puttied up smooth & painted. The frame is a C5 'Vette. A stock bodied Corvair is shown for comparison.

Okay, Part II!

To set my plan in motion. Here are the two donor cars.

Picking up this '67 coupe in spring.

Just bought this 1985 Corvette C4 roller. Wanted a C5, but are too much $$$ for me. The C4 wheelbase will need to be stretched to 'Vair length.

Anyway, will be knee deep when the weather warms up!

I am not sure if you are planning a front engine conversion or a mid engined conversion but Rod over on the other message board has a mid engined car that uses all C5 parts including the transaxle attaching the LS engine directly to the C5 4L60E transaxle with a truck bellhousing.
There is also this one with a Porsche transaxle and C5 suspension viewtopic.php?f=33&t=7110" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
