I finally got around to taking a picture of the body tag. Can anyone help decode the mystery?

I will decode the body tag for you...

The first two digits are numbers 01 through 12, indicating the month of manufacture. The letter is A-E, indicating the week of the month. If the letter is an "E" it indicates the fifth week of the month.

So am I correct in assuming that short of an engine serial number, there is no way, from the VIN alone, to tell which engine it came with (95hp or 110hp)?

Thanks for the information, though! Every little bit helps, not that it matters much at this point. LOL. I did find via a bit of reading that 64 110hp engines were a one year only item. The outside of the bore where it goes into the head is the smaller 3.75" (I think that's correct), vs the 65 and later having 3.8125" (again, I'm going off of memory). I guess that means that if the new set of pistons/barrels that came with the car are a bit rare, if they are in fact 64 only?

The 1964 Corvair, being the last of the early model Corvairs, was also the most-refined. The 1964 suspension included a front anti-sway bar on all cars, which was the first time that was done. Future years (1965-1969) continued with that refinement on the front suspension. The rear 1964 suspension was the only year to receive a transverse leaf spring to improve control of the swing-axle design, which was abandoned completely when the Corvette Stingray rear suspension design was adapted to the Corvair in 1965.

The 1964 engine was the first year for the magnesium fan, and the last year for the generator. (The alternator was introduced in the following year). The long-stroke 164 CI crankshaft was introduced in 1964, but as previously mentioned the 1964 cylinders were unique in that they were notched to accommodate the 164 CI stroke, but they continued with the outer diameter used in previous (1960-1963) years. That diameter was increased slightly in 1965 to increase the mating surface head gasket area between the cylinder barrel and the cylinder head.
