Re: My present project
This is a sample test piece.
I finished it with Clear Semi-Gloss Polyurethane from MinWax.
Did some exposure testing and it passed with flying semi-gloss clear colors!

Re: My present project
Dave - Nice job. Just a suggestion on the wood finish. Make sure the clear coat has a UV blocker for outside use. Otherwise the finish will fail in short order due to sunlight exposure. BTDT - LOL.

Re: My present project
Good advice on the Poly finish. Thanks.
Just an Idea of what it's going to look like.
More trim and parts installed this weekend. Also solved an electrical issue
with the lights.

When it comes to preserving fine wood for outdoor exposure look to the marine industry for tried and true solutions. Boats get very harsh water and UV exposure.66vairguy wrote:Just a suggestion on the wood finish. Make sure the clear coat has a UV blocker for outside use. Oh what fun, is the hunt!
I got these perfect NOS Corvair-95 door emblems from Michael Squires recently. I have looked at the re-pop's and found I wanted NOS instead.
Now what are the odds that 2 emblems from 53 years ago in New condition would still be out there?
Thanks to a tip from Jeff Williams at Calif. Corvairs, I was able to get in touch with Michael. His price was reasonable and I couldn't be happier.
These were the only 61-62 Corvair-95 emblems he had. Thanks Michael!
Just think.... I even beat Jay Leno out for these!

Re: My present project
First you take a sharp screwdriver and a hammer. Put 3 good dents in the door. Grab a dull drill bit and force it through the shiny new paintjob.
If your lucky, the holes will fit!
Actually after some in depth research and using the factory assembly manuals... I was able to locate the correct mounting position for the original 5" factory mirrors.
Thanks to Dann Weinoe for these perfect re-pop's of these extremely rare factory mirrors, I have just what I wanted on the Rampy. Look for these at your favorite Corvair Parts
vender, before they are all gone and have to wait for the next manufacturing run!

Re: My present project
I recently rebuilt these with all new weather strips an all. They will be next to install and get fit in the doors.
Yes.... they are quite a job to do. Getting them installed and aligned properly in the door's is another challenge.
Patience pays off!

Re: My present project
So I started this with the stock open fender of the Rampside. Got 2 more side panels and cut, fit, mounted tabs and nut-zerts.
Finally after the paint job, I was able to install them. This is the finished look I was going for. To make it look like Chevrolet had
planned on doing this all along. Calif. Corvairs provided the 2 stock bed panels I needed, in order to get the correct rolled edges
and continue the cover line.

Re: My present project
Just picked up the interior from the trim shop last night. Managed to at least get the seat installed.
If you are looking for a no-nonsense truly professional place to get your interior done, check out Mac's Upholstery
in Ventura Calif. Paul McLaren is a true craftsman.... and also a Corvair guy!
I wanted something just a bit different than most I have seen. I love Clarks upholstery and have it throughout my Greenbrier.
But for the Rampside I wanted something other.
The door panels will be matching as will the sun visors and arm rests. I will post better pictures when the sun is out and I get
the rest of the trim in.

New Shoes and Sox!
This weekend I managed to sand-blast all 4 wheels. Paint them and get new tires mounted. I had
hoped to get at least 2 done, but got the all!
Also, you may notice the gas filler trim ring. It's simply an Early car tail light housing. I cut the back
out so it would fit over the filler neck tube. Then used an extra filler neck tube gasket to hold it in place.
This is something I came up with some 20 years ago and have also had on my Greenbrier.
Easy Peasy!
