Cigarette lighter

Post by Fast Eddie »

Is it safe to use the Corvair cigarette lighter for devices like a GPS or cell phone?

If your cig lighter is like mine was you will have to clean the rust out. But yes, it should work fine.

A teacher gave us a test on a old car, he holds up the item and asks what it was. Everyone said cigarette lighter. everyone got it wrong. Answer on test was cigar lighter.
Just a funny story about them

I ran a GPS in mine several times before I took my car of the road for restoration. Never had a problem.

When I restore I may add an extra one under the center of the dash or in the left side of the glove box. I always had a problem w/ the cord getting caught in the door on my car's setup (EM Spyder), I think other years had the lighter elsewhere...

An updated design like one of these attached to a 12V source and mounted in the glove compartment can support multiple accessories and USB power/charging as well.

I use the original one in my '61 to charge my iPhone when at carshow and out driving.
