Torque spec is 32-38 ft lbs. Pattern is as follows: XXX are upper nuts or rocker studs looking at the head from teh valve cover side

-12--------8--------1---------4--------6--------10
XXX-----XXX-----XXX-----XXX-----XXX-----XXX

-11-------7---------3---------2--------5--------9
XXX-----XXX-----XXX-----XXX-----XXX-----XXX

hope that helps.

Terrible,
Are your head studs torqued ok, didvu use heli coils, time serts, or original block threads. Any pull out?

Note this thread is originally from 2010.

Most Vair experts these days (2020) recommend torquing at 30 ft# max to prevent pulling the studs out of the engine case no matter if they have original threads or use repair inserts. Some rebuilders will use a piece of sturdy pipe to test each stud individually at 35 ft# before they actually install the heads and torque to 30 ft# so that if one threaded hole is weak they will find it earlier while the case is still apart and easier to repair.

I also always torque to 30 foot pounds. Above I gave the shop manual spec and copied and pasted that diagram from somewhere.

Per Azdave the general consensus is to use 30 ft lbs. for the head torque, then recheck after some time to "settle". The manuals had several different ratings, all seem to be too high. The caveat here is the stud threads must be clean and smooth.

I've never had a head gasket leak using 30 ft lbs.

Cylinder Head Torque Detail.jpg

A 13/16" Deep Socket and 9/16" Socket is needed.
HEADNUTS – ORIGINAL STYLE:
Used ONLY on Upper Head Studs These have the original style built-in “collar”, (just a flat washer under a regular nut is not suggested). Our head nuts are heat treated & have been tested to over 55 ft/lb., however, they should not be reused after the engine is run & the nuts removed. Head nuts and rocker studs should only be torqued 32-34 ft/lb. For all Corvairs. 12 needed to do two (2) heads.

CHROME ACORN NUTS: Install after the headnuts to keep the ends of the studs from rusting (for upper studs).
